A large population of women have grown up with opportunities to compete in sports. Others, however, haven't had the same luck. Moms, aunts, cousins and grandmas faced struggles of not being given rights because of their gender. Up until 1972, women were discriminated against; but this changed for good when Sen. Birch Bayh pushed for and President Nixon signed Title IX into law, preventing discrimination based on sex, giving women the right to participate in sports at the high school and collegia...

According to History.com, 295,000 girls participated in high school sports in 1972. Title IX was established to correct imbalances between women’s and men’s athletics. Now, more than 2.6 million females participate in sports at the h...

From Babe Ruth to John Wayne, Americans have seen chewing tobacco in popular culture for over a century. In 2018, a survey showed 2.4% of American adults used smokeless tobacco, with snuff or snus pouch use on the rise and chewing tobacco on the decline. Though smokeless tobacco use is not associated with lung cancer like smoking is, it has its own...

LEO ADAM BIGA Flatwater Free Press University of Nebraska volleyball coach John Cook entered the 2009 season having won 281 of his first 300 games – a ridiculous .937 winning percentage. At age 52, he had already won two national titles. But, inside, Cook didn't feel like how you are supposed to feel when you reach the summit. Instead, even as his squad went 31-3 and reached the Final Four that year, Cook felt empty. Lost. He felt like a failure. "I thought I had it figured out and then it a...

LEO ADAM BIGA FLATWATER FREE PRESS As fighters went through their paces one recent night at B&B Sports Academy, its co-owner, world welterweight boxing champion Terence "Bud" Crawford, got right in the mix, interacting with pros and amateurs alike. He coached boxers at the North Omaha gym, teased them, cajoled them, encouraged them. He occasionally glanced over at 11-year-old Reno Busby, a nationally ranked USA Boxing bantamweight. Busby's coaches – and Crawford himself – believe the Davis Mid...

One of my favorite summer events - popping up like a leap year - begins in just over 10 days. Watching the summer Olympics, the pure joy of viewing the best of the best, has been a mainstay since I was young. I'll admit, the Olympic world feels a tad bit tilted this year, since the games are a year off, due to last year's cancellation because of the pandemic. I may have been only seven years old, but I still remember sitting in the living room with the 'rents, watching track and field...

Coach Greg Appleby said Wagner needed 13 points to hit the mark last Thursday. She ended with 17. Wagner has been in love with the game...

Before the ‘rents married, Dad purchased box seats, near the field of Memorial Stadium. He didn’t miss a game. Once they were hitched, they became season ticket holders and since 1955, someone from our family could be found sitting in our west stadium seats. Dad always said he should have requested four tickets ins...
