  • 'Grumpy' ticket holder decries big money in college sports

    Paul Hammel|Jul 8, 2026

For nearly 30 years, I’ve been a season ticket holder for Nebraska volleyball matches. I also used to cover the sport. I was around when then-Coach Terry Pettit was begging football fans to attend volleyball matches after watching a football game. Way back in the day (years before I caught the volleyball bug) loyal fans used to set up their own folding chairs so they could watch a match. Fast forward to today. Home volleyball matches in Lincoln have been sold out for years, making it harder f...

  • CLEARWATER TO CLEARWATER TO CLEARWATER

    Faith King, Journalist|Jun 24, 2026

You've heard of "A Tale of Two Cities" by Charles Dickens, but have you heard of A Tale of Three Clearwaters? The communities of Clearwater, Minnesota; Clearwater, Kansas; and Clearwater, Nebraska, all share a name - as well as a love for rodeo. The Silver Bullet Saddle Club hosts an annual rodeo located between Clearwater, Minnesota, St. Cloud, and the Twin Cities. In an interview, Kari Wrobel, secretary of the club, said, "We were established in 1979 as a saddle club and started putting on...

  • Resilient Nebraskans always say 'it could have been worse'

Paul Hammel, Retired senior reporter for Nebraska Examiner|Jun 24, 2026

Back in the day, reporters used to be able to hitch a ride with the governor or National Guard to the site of a disastrous tornado or flood. One of those trips involved a flight to Coleridge, in northeast Nebraska, after a tornado had destroyed two farm homes and damaged several residences on the north edge of the town. At one of the farms, the owner stood just outside the now-bare foundation where his house once stood. The house was gone. “It could have been worse,” he said. No one had bee...

  • Another year, another round of tax breaks to retain corporation

    Paul Hammel|Apr 8, 2026

"To the Arch by March." That was the scary slogan circulating throughout Omaha back in the 1980s when both Union Pacific and ConAgra were threatening to move their corporate headquarters out of the River City. (U.P. was said to be looking at St. Louis, home of the Gateway Arch.) That meant that hundreds of good paying jobs would be leaving Nebraska and that Omaha's status as a home of corporate headquarters would be diminished. Never fear, the Nebraska Legislature and then-Gov. Kay Orr... Full story

  • Call a 30-second timeout, before changing the criteria for selection to the Nebraska Hall of Fame

    Paul Hammel|Feb 4, 2026

Tom Osborne for the Nebraska Hall of Fame? Sign me up. But maybe it's worth spending a bit of time considering the rules for induction into the state's most prestigious honor. They aren't very good. First off, a person must have been dead for 35 years before they can be considered. That always made me wonder, will people remember how big a deal night-show host Johnny Carson, of Norfolk, was? He was the undisputed "King of Late Night" who regularly reminded us that he was from Nebraska. Heck,...

  • Isms: Views on life in rural america

    LuAnn Schindler, Publisher|Dec 17, 2025

Heartbroken. Almost 24 hours have passed since Husker volleyball’s season ended a week earlier than hoped for. I still feel the sting today, especially for the players and coaches who dedicate their time and talents to our state’s cherished treasure. On any given day, an undefeated team may lose. The loss hurts -- it requires peeking into windows dotted with unanswered questions -- but it does not diminish the spark and grit we fans have witnessed throughout the season. I’ve listened to comme...

  • Thanksgiving dinner is served ... and you'll never guess who is invited

    Nov 26, 2025

If the third graders at Summerland Elementary planned Thanksgiving, the guest list would be anything but ordinary. From favorite celebrities to fictional heroes - and even a few surprise visitors - these imaginative diners earned an invite for reasons as sweet as pumpkin pie and as silly as a turkey doing the hokeypokey. If I could invite anyone to Thanksgiving dinner it would be Jason because he is my best friend. The reason is he helps me. He is nice to me. He also plays with me. If Jason...

When it rains, it pours. Right now, I would settle for a few sprinkles. The engine in my Kia is kaput. At least that’s what a highly-qualified mechanic told me. It does have approximately 200,000 miles. (The first Kia we owned racked up almost 375,000 before the transmission caused trouble. Scott hopes it’s just a sensor, the one the dealership’s mechanic said “could” mean the sensor needs replaced or could mean the timing chain and engine are failing. Looks like the second option is closer to...

I hope on Wednesday, when this week’s edition hits the mail, this column has aged well. Matt Rhule isn’t going to Penn State. Now, he may get a call from the Nittany Lions’ athletic director, but I do not see him fleeing Lincoln for the likes of State College. Sure, he’s a former walk-on linebacker and a PSU grad, but the grass isn’t always greener near the Rothrock State Forest. Ask the current Central Florida coach how well it works to return as head coach of your alma mater. I listened...
