  • Isms: Views on life in rural america

    LuAnn Schindler, Publisher|Dec 17, 2025

Heartbroken. Almost 24 hours have passed since Husker volleyball’s season ended a week earlier than hoped for. I still feel the sting today, especially for the players and coaches who dedicate their time and talents to our state’s cherished treasure. On any given day, an undefeated team may lose. The loss hurts -- it requires peeking into windows dotted with unanswered questions -- but it does not diminish the spark and grit we fans have witnessed throughout the season. I’ve listened to comme...

  • Trade war again pinches farmers, leading to $12 billion bailout

    Paul Hammel|Dec 17, 2025

So much for cutting federal spending. Just recently, President Trump announced a new $12 billion payout to American farmers. It's not a reward for great work – farmers produced another record crop this year. No, it's a bailout for a failed tariff war with China, that largest customer for our agricultural crops. President Trump loves tariffs, no doubt about that, despite the fact that when you place an additional tax on foreign goods, it gets passed on eventually to us at the cash register. B...

Please be aware that any proposal discussed here is subject to change and may or may not be ultimately introduced at my discretion. Earlier this year, an individual reached out to me who qualified for the disabled veteran homestead exemption but was unable to submit the necessary documents prior to the Jun...

The hospital is one of the largest employers in the 1,115-person town of Pender, Gamble said. It delivers more than 120 babies...

Summerland boys basketball coach Brett Kaczor thought his team got off to a "fantastic start" against Niobrara/Verdigre last Friday. And then? "You could almost see us relax and let them back into it. We got away from our tempo and defense, which led to us being down late," Kaczor said. The Bobcats narrowly escaped with a 51-49 win. "Credit to our guys though, they kept fighting and never showed any real panic. They made some really nice plays down the stretch and locked in on the defensive...
