The story of families, faith and perseverance is woven into the fabric of St. Peter de Alcantara Church in Ewing. Parishioners hope those stories - along with the church's neoclassical architecture - will help land the church and rectory on the National Register of Historic Places. Becky Kaczor said she and Greg Ramold approached the church council about pursuing the designation. They enlisted Ramold's niece, Maggie Ramold-Kile, who gathered data, compiled the initial application and contacted...

The sacrifice and service of those who serve our nation were honored Saturday during the dedication of the Clearwater Veterans Park. Committee member Steve Stearns welcomed visitors. "This veterans park stands as a symbol of our gratitude, our remembrance, and community pride," he said. The vision for the park grew from a conversation for Barb and the late Ralph Tichota, to create a place where all could walk together, visit, reflect, and pay their respects to those who fought for our freedom....

Poodle skirts, banana splits, and golden oldies set the stage as Ewing's finest seniors cruised back to the 1950s for the 106th-annual Sunset Banquet, a Ewing tradition honoring area residents ages 70-plus. Guests celebrated the era with music, food, trivia, and prizes. Carhops delivered cheeseburgers, fries, and Cherry Cokes (or 7-Up) and served banana splits. The origin of the banquet goes back to 1917, when the Methodist Episcopal Ladies Aid honored elder members of the community. For 100 yea...

With the crop harvest ongoing and hunting seasons continuing to open, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission reminds hunters to be courteous. Hunters should expect to encounter farm vehicles and equipment on country roads and make room for them when they do so. Large equipment can need extra room on the road, so hunters, whether hunting on private land or public land, should park in provided lots and not along public roadways. As a reminder, no person may hunt on private land without the explicit permission of the landowner. A hunter of...

Lately, I’ve been thinking about the scene in Yellowstone, when Beth calls the Four Sixes Ranch in Texas and discovers they sell their own beef. No middle man. When she tells her dad, John Dutton, what she’s learned he responds, “No one can figure out the packer.” Maybe now is the time for cattle producers to figure out the packer - or the problem - in this case and eliminate the middle man. My husband, after reading this, will more than likely tell me I shouldn’t talk about selling beef or rais...
That wasn’t the result we wanted or expected. The Huskers seemed to come out flat last Friday night, and Minnesota was the more physical and disciplined team. A disappointing game in more ways than one. After the Michigan loss earlier this season, I wrote that we should look forward to Nebraska going undefeated through the month of October to take the next step forward as a program. Obviously, this team was not ready to take that next step. The same issues we’ve seen most of the year - poor pass protection, leaky run defense, lack of est...

None of us like paying taxes. But even the Bible says we're supposed to ("Give unto Caesar what is Caesar's" is how I remember it). Anyway, I about fell out of my chair the other day when reading a probing article by the Lincoln Journal-Star's Andrew Wegley about the state's lackadaisical collection of taxes. When I pay my taxes, I'm expecting everyone else to do the same. But that's not happening in Nebraska (really it never has) but the number of tax scofflaws is growing. The story detailed... Bella Kester had one goal in mind as she completed the circuit around the Ainsworth Golf Course: Have enough gas in the tank to kick it in at the end. Kester's strategy worked. She advances to the NSAA State Cross Country Championships and will run at noon at the Kearney Country Club. Her next goal? "I want to be confident and not be worried about it and run my...
