Humans have a penchant for looking far ahead. Ask a room of kids what they want to be when they grow up, and you’ll quickly discover just how creative we can be when it comes to envisioning our future. Along the same lines, if you ask members of a community about their dreams for their hometown, you’ll leave with a long list. The tricky thing about the future, though, is that it hasn’t happened yet. Even with the most meticulous planning, events undoubtedly unfold in ways we can’t quite foretel...

It's just the ninth-grader and social studies teacher Ken Wright – an unintentional private lesson for the only freshman in this school. At Loup County High School, Bailley is the sole member of the class of 2027. The cla...

Every year, as the new year approaches, we scour newspapers to see how each approaches its top list of articles. Some break it down by category. Others separate local from national news. Some choose not to report a list. We see merits in all of those approaches. While the top 10 stories listed below are based strictly on the number of unique visitors to that story's dedicated web page, we, as publishers, feel a number of important - and a few fun - articles didn't make the cut. One of our...

One of my favorite daily reads is from Revitalize, or Die by Jeff Siegler, an economic development specialist who tells it like it is. Siegler writes, “The only way to combat the effects of apathy is in fostering a sense of civic pride. By focusing on identity, aesthetics, sense of community, standards, engagement and action, I assist communities in becoming places residents can be proud to call home.” So much of what Siegler says makes sense: • “Neglect is simply delaying cost and effort...
“We must remember these American heroes and speak their names when we see their family members. We can never forget those who sacrificed everything for our freedom,” said Bill Williams, co-creator of the Remeber the Fallen memorial. “While this memorial is about those who have died, it was created for the living … to help the families in their grief, while reminding the rest of us of the terrible price paid for our freedom by our current generation of military.” A very emotional memorial, Remembering Our Fallen, is a stark reminder of the ul...
