Students, teachers set for return to classrooms

New year • Granite and Austin Pilcher arrive at Summerland School, for the first day of classes last school year. The 2023-24 school year begins Tuesday, Aug. 15.

The countdown for the beginning of the 2023-2024 school year is underway, as Summerland Public School students will return to class, Tuesday, Aug. 15. A 1:30 p.m. dismissal is scheduled that day.

Staff members reported to work for staff development earlier this month and will be on site, Monday, Aug. 14 for continued inservice training.

Families of students in preschool through sixth grade are invited to an open house, Monday, Aug. 14, from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

The Bobcat Booster club will host a burger bash, Monday, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., at the school.

Preschool students will report for the first day of classes Wednesday, Aug. 16.

Several new employees will join the Bobcat staff, while a number of current employees assume new duties.

Zach Rosenboom will serve as 7 - 12 principal and athletic director. He replaces Greg Appleby, who retired in May.

Ashley Harrison will replace Becky Eickholt, in the Family Consumer Science classroom. Eickholt retired at the end of the school year.Harrison will also sponsor the FCCLA program.

Danielle Birch joins the staff as a 7 - 12 grade math instructor and will lead the Bobcat volleyball team in the head coach capacity.

Three new faces will greet students in the elementary school.

Ashley Larby, who completed a student-teaching stint at Summerland will teach sixth grade. She replaces Tabetha Frank, who will teach in Elgin.

Kara Ahlers will replace Morgan Schrunk as a fifth-grade teacher. Schrunk accepted a position with Lincoln Public Schools.

Jordyn Kuhl will serve as the elementary special education teacher.

Connie Cronin will transition to a full-time position in the English language learners program.

Tom Thramer, current Bobcat football coach, will serve as a full-time substitute teacher.

Christine Thoendel joins the kitchen staff as a hot lunch assistant.

The first week ends with the Bobcat football team hosting Riverside, Aug. 18. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.

The volleyball team will begin its season Monday, Aug. 21, as the host team for a Jamboree. Summerland will play Riverside at 5 p.m. At 6, Boone Central will face Riverside and at 7, the Lady Cats will meet Boone Central.

The cross country team will travel to Burwell, Aug. 24, for its first meet of the season. Competition will begin at 4 p.m.
