Bobcat wrestlers earn medals in two classes at state tournament

Summerland wrestlers earned two medals at the 2022 Nebraska State Individual Wrestling Championships, held Feb. 17 - 19, at the CHI Center, in Omaha.

Seniors Logan Mueller and Colton Thiele closed their high school careers with trips to the medal round.

Wrestling in the 285 class, Mueller opened the meet with an 8-1 decision over Andrew Koehlmoos, of St. Mary's.

In the quarterfinal, Jordy Baland, of Doniphan-Trumbull, fought off the Bobcat powerhouse, earning a 4-2 decision.

The loss sent Mueller to the consolation bracket. He earned a 3-1 decision over Xander Albin, of Plainview and pinned Ashton Meyer, of Perkins County, in 4:54.

In the consolation semifinal, Mueller lost a 5-1 tiebreaker to Isaac Welch, of Mullen.

In the fifth-place match, Mueller claimed a 3-1 decision of JySeann Pugh, of Pleasanton.

Thiele opened competition in the 195 class with a 9-4 decision of Morrill's Michael Morgan and picked up a quarterfinal win over Ashton Hawkins, of Axtell, in 5:17.

In the semifinal, Thiele suffered a knee injury, :29 into the match against Sid Miller of Anselmo-Merna.

The medical forfeit sent Thiele to the consolation bracket where he was unable to continue.

He earned the sixth-place medal.

Keaton Thiele opened with a match against Mason Noel, of Southern Valley, in the 145 division.

Noel pinned the Bobcat freshman in 2:51.

In a consolation match, Thiele dropped a hard-fought decision, 3-0, to Benjamin Klemesrud, of North Central.

Alex Arroyo earned a win, by fall, in 4:22, over Hunter Douglas, of Ravenna in the first round at 160, but was sent to the consolation bracket after a loss to eventual state champion, Steven Menke, of Bridgeport.

Menke pinned Arroyo in 3:14.

Arroyo won his first consolation match, by fall, in 3:47, over Jacob Hegemann, of Howells-Dodge.

That set up a heartbreak round match against Trevin Brecka, of East Butler. Brecka escaped with a 5-3 win, eliminating Arroyo.

Wyatt Chipps opened against Austin Meyer, of Perkins County, and lost a 10-2 major decision.

Chipps pinned Cameron Carr, Brady, in :29 and earned a pin over Casey Miller, of Bayard.

In the heartbreak round, Chipps lost, by fall, in 2:38, to Cale Buss, of Burwell.

The Bobcat boys' team finished 17th in the 63-team field, scoring 33 points.

In the girls' tournament, Lenora Kester was eliminated in two matches. Hasley Salgado, of Schuyler, pinned Kester in :37 and in the consolation match, Lily Gomez, of Red Cloud/Blue Hill, pinned Kester in 2:51.
