The condition of a stretch of 516 Avenue, from Highway 275 north two miles, consumed nearly 60 minutes during Tuesday's Antelope County Commissioners' meeting, in Neligh. Commissioner Eli Jacob, who represents Clearwater, expressed concerns about excessive dust on the road since the oil surface was milled and replaced with Sinclair gravel. "I was told when we ground it up that it would be a year and we'd get an overlay. It's been a year this spring and we don't have an overlay yet," Jacob said....

There's something about a bad boy. For instance, my favorite literary character is MacBeth, Shakespeare's good-boy-gone-bad. In the beginning, MacBeth is kind, maybe even an overachiever. But once he tastes sweet success, the passion for power and ambition culminate in his undoing. My favorite character from a TV show is Tony Soprano, whose storyline in the David Chase-inspired show mirrors MacBeth. There's something lovable about Tony, but you wouldn't want to cross him or you may find...

It's the final night of competition at Clearwater's 54th annual Big Rodeo. Dr. Melissa Heithold pulls into Gene Snodgrass Arena, parks her vehicle and unloads the three young cowboys - her sons Blake, Travis and Austin - who were buckled in the back seat. "They're mutton busting tonight." Once the youngsters have grasped on to a sheep, are being tossed into dirt and receive a buck and candy coupon from the rodeo queen, Heithold transitions from mom mode to doctor. For approximately a dozen years...

When asked how she felt when she heard her name announced for Miss Clearwater Rodeo, Sellin said, "I felt happiness and...

The search for the truth should be a top priority for a journalist. It’s a journalist’s responsibility to present factual information in a clear and precise manner. Even when the reporter is nine years old. I’m intrigued with Apple TV’s series, “Home Before Dark.” It’s a fictionalized take of real-life reporter, Hilde Lysiak, who, at nine years old, broke a local murder case in her self-published newspaper. The show - part-mystery, part-drama, with a dose of comedy - shows Lysiak’s determination...

Michael Connelly wrote, “A newspaper is the center of a community, it’s one of the tent poles of the community, and that’s not going to be replaced by websites and blogs.” The best-selling author and I are on the same page. A printed paper will be archived and preserved for future use. A website, well, that’s not always a permanent form of history. Neither is social media, which I have written about previously. I’ve had multiple conversations lately, with friends and colleagues, about prese...

A capital campaign to construct a youth enrichment center on the Antelope County Fairgrounds is underway. The idea hatched after the 2020 show-and-go fair, as participation numbers in poultry and rabbit exhibits skyrocketed. Rhonda Meyer, campaign committee chairman, said exhibitor numbers in these areas have increased exponentially in the past five years. "Poultry exhibits have gone up 44% and rabbit entries are up 256%," she said. "We went from eight rabbits to 50 last year." During fair...

Silence slipped through the halls of Clearwater Public School Tuesday morning. Classes are dismissed for summer vacation and the annual noise associated with preparing the building for the next year isn't present. Sounds of laughter, learning and love still echo inside, a lasting impression of educational opportunities offered here. This fall, students will move to a new facility - Summerland School - at the intersection of 513 Avenue and Summerland Road and begin writing the next pages of...

Emily Dickinson wrote, “Hold dear to your parents for it is a scary and confusing world without them.” So true. I’ve been sentimental lately, tears have flowed fairly steadily, as Father’s Day nears. I cannot count the number of times, since the new year started, I would be watching a Husker basketball or baseball game and think, “I need to call Dad and remind him the Huskers are playing.” I cannot count the number of times I hear some song pop on the radio and I am transported to Clay Center...

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. After surviving cancer, Bill Kruger decided to squeeze a lifelong dream into reality. "I've always wanted a muscle car," Kruger said. The Clearwater resident's sweet indulgence: a yellow 1964 Chevrolet Malibu. Sometimes, though, life turns sour. Last August, Kruger was diagnosed with cancer. Surgery followed on Sept. 11. "What a day," he said. "There was just a dinky, dinky spot on my liver." Kruger asked the surgeon if he needed surgery for such a...

“Someone is going to die.” Naturally, this sentence piqued my attention. I wasn’t eavesdropping on the conversation where the above-mentioned line was uttered. Oh, contrare. It was said during a public gathering, by an individual sitting next to Scott and me. In fact, several comments from this person and the group he/she was with caught my attention. I was making a mental note to speak with them privately about their concerns, when one of the group members told about an incident they witne...
