Now, as she celebrates her third birthday on Valentine's Day, Ruby's resilience shines as brightly as the gemstone and great-grandmother she shares a name with. On a recent Friday afternoon, Ruby sang the ABC song and serenaded her mom, Jolene, with "The Wheels on the Bus." "What she does now...

If I had an extra $8 million tucked away, I’m not sure I would have spent it on a 30-second spot during Sunday’s big game. A couple caused chuckles, others left me scratching my head. The biggest takeaway: social awareness can be subtle and effective. Dove’s “Keep Her Confident” spot packed a strong message. At age three, a young girl running is unstoppable. By age 14, the same girl will think her legs are unbearable. “One in two girls who quit sports are criticized for their body type. Let’s ch...

Ten years ago, Omaha Public Power District Board member Eric Williams first installed solar panels on his home. Since then, he has upgraded his system with a Sol-Ark 15 kW inverter and 9.6 kWh Lithion HomeGrid batteries. This created a small-scale "nano grid," which supports the ultimate goal of a resilient, electrified home with lower costs and greater energy security. The inverter plays a crucial role, directing energy between his solar panels, battery and home to ensure efficient power use....

Nebraska, I'll bet, is the only state in the union where the retirement of the volleyball coach is front-page news. And where the installation of a new coach is covered live on television with the governor in attendance. But that's what happened after legendary coach and cowboy John Cook announced recently that he was riding into the sunset and leaving a team that he'd guided to four national titles over 25 years. "It's better to burn out than fade out," Cook said at his retirement press...

My guess for spring, it will be mildly early. By now we know if the groundhog or I revealed shadows of ourselves. Regardless of Phil's or my prediction, spring will come as it does every year and I can hardly wait. I've been reviewing photos of flowers from last year and iris and peonies pop up. There's also pansies and geraniums. Oh, the colors. While I dream of perennials blooming in the garden, I'm anxious to dig out my plastic seed trays. A new tray might be on my list. It's hard to resist t...

Nowadays, TV and internet commercials are encouraging men to consider testosterone replacement as the way to become stronger. While they are quick to tout the benefits, the risks are important and should not be ignored. Testosterone is the hormone in men that is produced...
