Charitable gaming in Antelope and Holt counties played out like a split deck this past year, with sharp town-by-town swings reshaping the odds, even as statewide wagering slipped. While Nebraska overall saw charitable gaming decline of about 2.6%, Holt County bucked the house with a sizable increase and a modest rise in keno play, even as Ewing's wagering dipped. Antelope County, meanwhile, followed the statewide slide, posting a roughly 4% drop overall as Orchard's surge at the keno counter...

All Holt County offices want to alert residents and businesses that they should plan ahead when submitting time-sensitive mail following a recent clarification by the United States Postal Service regarding postmarking practices. Residents are encouraged to take extra precautions when mailing documents that rely on a postmark to meet statutory or regulator...

A recycling program could return to Clearwater if village trustees decide to apply for a grant through FirstStar Recycling. The grant would fund a sectioned trailer for cardboard, newspapers, plastic milk jugs, and glass. The sole cost to the village would be to transport recyclables to the compactor at Neligh. I’ve been thinking a lot about hands-on education. Recently, I read an article from the Daily Yonder, which focuses on stories from rural America, highlighting a newspaper in Wisconsin - the Pulaski News - which has been a student-run community newspaper for 80 years. When the former owner decided to halt publication, the local school superintendent opted to keep the newspaper operational by having students deliver the news. The journalism teacher serves as the editor-in-chief. Students r...

Across Nebraska and the country, lawmakers are gathering in their state capitols and Washington, D.C. to begin another year of debating and passing legislation. The democratic process is something America prides itself on and one that requires input to thrive. While the process for public contributions varies by state, one commonality exists-lawmakers need to hear directly from their constituents on issues that are important to them. How can you make sure your voice is heard? Whether you're...
The Nebraska State Education Association strongly opposes Gov. Jim Pillen’s plan to include $7 million for a private school voucher program within the Nebraska Department of Labor’s budget. At a time when Nebraska’s budget is under intense scrutiny and lawmakers are weighing cuts to essential services, this proposal raises serious concerns about misplaced priorities and a lack of respect for voters’ clear rejection of voucher schemes. “Despite sending a very clear message at the ballot box in the last election, the governor has decided y...

As a reporter, you cover all kinds of stories. Stories about natural disasters, murders, grandmas who collect cookie jars and good samaritans. But it's the stories about fraud that make you scratch your head the most. What drives people, usually already prosperous people, to steal from their local sports club, collections for a sick person, or the town treasury? And, of course, there's all those scams on the internet. Often, the stealing is done by someone who appeared trustworthy and honest....

Summerland boys basketball finished last week 1-2. Coach Brett Kaczor said he thought his squad competed well. After leading most of the game, the Bobcats experienced a "tough loss to Creighton. It was another scenario that this group is going to learn from." Thursday's game against St. Mary's isn't indicative of how well the Bobcats played against a quality team, according to Kaczor. On Friday, the team finished with a quality win over LCC. "We found ourselves down early, battled back and held...

The Lady Bobcats defeated Creighton, 53-42, in a home contest played Jan. 13. Coach Jackson Medina said his team did a lot well in terms of scoring and playing team basketball. Credit to St. Mary's as they were able to capitalize against us on this night." The Cardinals slipped past the bobcats, 36-32, in the Jan. 15 game played on...
