A week ago, six column ideas were whirling and, while I’m still working out the language kinks in some of them, this one has been on my mind. Husker football season is only a few weeks away, it’s one of my favorite times of the year. Someone asked me this question recently and I’ve been kicking it around, replaying games, hoping to select one key moment. I finally decided my answer to this question, and I’m wondering if die-hard Husker fans will agree. Let me know. So here’s the question:...

Prior to competition, contestants took part in a calcutta, with bidders hoping to capture a share of winnings. Three riders took home pocket change in bareback competition....

Personnel at the Orchard Swimming Pool dove into action Thursday during a coordinated emergency training exercise. After a simulated flip off the diving board, a lifeless body floated in the water. Lifeguard Preslie Robertson sounded her whistle and dove in. Co-manager Dani Janke called 911. Dylan Rotherham grabbed the backboard and sprinted to the scene. Lydia Robertson cleared the pool and joined the response. Once the "victim" was pulled from the water, the Robertsons and Rotherham took...

Based on preliminary figures, presented to Holt County Supervisors during a July 31 meeting, the road budget will see approximately a $300,000 increase from the previous year's proposal. Holt County Road Superintendent Gary Connot told supervisors the increase includes salary and equipment increases. "We adjusted the capital outlay by about $100,000," Connot said. Chairman Bill Tielke asked if the budget stays within a 3% increase, a number tossed around by state officials, primarily Gov. Jim...

Isn’t the mind a wonderful thing? Or is it a curse? Six column ideas have been occupying space in my mind since last Friday and none of them have surfaced with enough fodder to be meaningful. So, I’m going to keep letting those ideas brew for another week - and gather a few more facts - and get them sorted out for next week. Some days - or weeks - are like that ... a jumbled ball of thoughts that need organized. By next week, everything will be clear ... and in print....

Grace Ahlers doesn't mind getting her hands dirty - especially with twin brothers Ben and Jack by her side. Powered by dairy determination, the trio has turned barn chores into family bonding and purple-ribbon memories. Showing Holsteins at the Antelope County Fair isn't just a summer tradition - it's the cream of their crop, where hard work, heritage, and a whole lot of moo-scle churn into one udderly unforgettable week. Grace topped the charts in the dairy barn, earning junior showmanship...

Arthur Miller wrote, “A good newspaper is a nation talking to itself.” I like the idea of conversation generating from the newspaper, especially from items on this page. In college, my journalism prof, Sharon Behl Brooks, stressed how editorial (or commentary or opinion ... whatever label you pin on it) presents a point of view, sparks discussion and, at its core, prompts critical thinking. The editorial page of the Advocate-Messenger does that and presents a wide range of thoughts. On the com...

How often do you spend $2.50 on a 20-ounce pop or $2.59 to satisfy a sweet tooth? So why hesitate to pay just over $1 for quality local news? It costs about $2 to produce a single copy of SAM each week-a true bargain in today's economy. Since the Advocate-Messenger launched in July 2019, printing and mailing costs have soared. That doesn't include time spent covering events, writing articles, designing ads, or meeting with advertisers. On average, each issue includes 10 pages, with four in full...

A decision on replacing the Summerland Public School charter bus will hopefully take place in the next several weeks. Board of education members were in agreement to continue searching for a used bus with fewer miles and in better shape than the current bus, as long as a replacement can be found for $150,000 to $200,000. Superintendent Molly Aschoff said bus inventory "goes fast." If a replacement isn't secured, the current bus will require new tires and brakes. Board member Chelsi McLain...

While reading Paul Hammel’s “All Things Nebraska” column, I had to chuckle — and wonder how many of us spent our youth detasseling corn. Hand raised, even if only for two summers. If you’ve ever walked those long rows, ripping tassels out, you know about corn sweat. That suffocating heat made early mornings rough. Add a layer of center pivot water, and you’ve got the perfect mix of hot and humid. Detasseling meant climbing on a school bus before sunrise, long-sleeved shirts soaked in dew, and...
