The University of Nebraska–Lincoln conferred a record 3,884 degrees during commencement exercises May 8-9 at Pinnacle Bank Arena. The 3,761 graduates - also a record - are from 61 countries; 46 U.S. states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico; and 230-plus Nebraska communities. DeMoine Adams, motivational speaker and former Husker football student-athlete, delivered the keynote address, "The Power of People," during the morning undergraduate ceremony. Mason Hoke, of Orchard, graduated from the College of Education and Human Services. He r...

What is it about Nebraskans and the slab of aluminum we bolt onto the back of our cars, the license plate? For some reason, we Cornhuskers get emotional over the design of the state's plates. There are gripes aplenty. "It's too boring." "You can't see the graphic." "It doesn't represent our state." "It doesn't inspire people to visit or live there." Nebraskans' opinions about license plates are almost as strong as those about the second-string quarterback for the Huskers. Why isn't that guy...

Shelby native Curt Tomasevicz fulfilled his dream of playing football for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, where he was a scrappy special teamer. But since then, his life and career have taken a circuitous route - a twisting, turning path kind of like a bobsled course. Tomasevicz, who grew up in a 700-person town hundreds of miles from the nearest mountain, is now on the USA Bobsledding leadership team as director of sport performance. And he's currently at the Winter Olympics in Italy. The...

Oh, the weather outside is … too damn cold. I don’t know how you cold-weather fans do it. Sixty degrees year-round? Fine by me. Sunny and seventy-five? Perfection. Ninety with clear, cerulean skies? I’d thrive. But this? As I get older — and as arthritis settles into places it has no business being — this is for the birds. You know it’s cold when I bail on a Husker football game early. In the past 20 years, I’ve left exactly one before the final seconds ticked away — a USC game during the Bill...

If the third graders at Summerland Elementary planned Thanksgiving, the guest list would be anything but ordinary. From favorite celebrities to fictional heroes - and even a few surprise visitors - these imaginative diners earned an invite for reasons as sweet as pumpkin pie and as silly as a turkey doing the hokeypokey. If I could invite anyone to Thanksgiving dinner it would be Jason because he is my best friend. The reason is he helps me. He is nice to me. He also plays with me. If Jason...

When it rains, it pours. Right now, I would settle for a few sprinkles. The engine in my Kia is kaput. At least that’s what a highly-qualified mechanic told me. It does have approximately 200,000 miles. (The first Kia we owned racked up almost 375,000 before the transmission caused trouble. Scott hopes it’s just a sensor, the one the dealership’s mechanic said “could” mean the sensor needs replaced or could mean the timing chain and engine are failing. Looks like the second option is closer to...
If at the start of the season, we were told Nebraska had the chance to be relevant in the month of November, we would take that every time. Never mind how ugly some of the wins have been. Never mind the what ifs against Michigan. Never mind the disappointing effort on the road against Minnesota. Nebraska is 6-2, sitting just outside the top 25, with #23 USC coming to Lincoln Saturday night, with an opportunity to reclaim and maximize this season. Now I’m not saying this team is going to make a run through the playoffs. But it’s not out of the...

I hope on Wednesday, when this week’s edition hits the mail, this column has aged well. Matt Rhule isn’t going to Penn State. Now, he may get a call from the Nittany Lions’ athletic director, but I do not see him fleeing Lincoln for the likes of State College. Sure, he’s a former walk-on linebacker and a PSU grad, but the grass isn’t always greener near the Rothrock State Forest. Ask the current Central Florida coach how well it works to return as head coach of your alma mater. I listened...

Summerland and O'Neill volleyball teams will host a pink out game when they meet on the Bobcat's home court, Oct. 7. C team play begins at 5, followed by junior varsity at 6 and varsity at 7. A silent auction, featuring Husker football and volleyball tickets, gift baskets, gift certificates and more, will be held. A freewill donation bake sale will also be available. Proceeds from the event will be shared with a local family....

The first three home Saturdays of the Husker football season have come and gone, and Nebraska State Troopers were on patrol to keep fans safe on the way to and from Lincoln. Troopers throughout Nebraska made 30 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol on the first three home gamedays of the season. Six of those arrests occurred in Lancaster County in the hours surrounding a Husker football game. During the first month of home games last season, troopers made 35 DUI arrests, including...

The summer driving season is rolling to a stop and the Nebraska State Patrol is working to keep roadways safe. Troopers throughout Nebraska will be working overtime for the next few weeks as part of the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign. The goal is to reduce the likelihood of serious injury or fatality crashes related to impaired driving or other dangerous driving behaviors. "The end of summer brings several high traffic events," said Col. Bryan Waugh, superintendent of the...

A week ago, six column ideas were whirling and, while I’m still working out the language kinks in some of them, this one has been on my mind. Husker football season is only a few weeks away, it’s one of my favorite times of the year. Someone asked me this question recently and I’ve been kicking it around, replaying games, hoping to select one key moment. I finally decided my answer to this question, and I’m wondering if die-hard Husker fans will agree. Let me know. So here’s the question:...

It's tax season, and who doesn't dislike filing their taxes? It takes time away from things like checking on the latest Husker football recruit or seeing what new fight we're having with Canada. And it's a messy, mathematic-heavy task, requiring a lot of wading through regulations. But there's one thing I detest more, and that's when people don't pay their taxes, unlike you and me. If I gotta pay, I reason, so should everyone else. On the federal level, it's estimated that nearly $600 billion a...

Greg Sharpe, the voice of Husker Radio, died Friday, from pancreatic cancer, at age 61. The recent 2024 Nebraska Sportscaster of the Year recipient wass diagnosed with cancer in 2024. Sharpe provided play-by-play action for Husker football since November 2007, when he finished the final three games of the season and permanently took over in 2008. He also led the Nebraska baseball broadcast team since 2008. Sharpe is survived by his wife, Amy, and daughters Emily, Campbell and Taylor. Dr....

Nebraska, I'll bet, is the only state in the union where the retirement of the volleyball coach is front-page news. And where the installation of a new coach is covered live on television with the governor in attendance. But that's what happened after legendary coach and cowboy John Cook announced recently that he was riding into the sunset and leaving a team that he'd guided to four national titles over 25 years. "It's better to burn out than fade out," Cook said at his retirement press...

Tell me the landscape of college football is changing without telling me the landscape of college football is changing. Take example No. 1. Last week, Marshall officials announced that its team will not play in the Independence Bowl, due to “player unavailability due to activity in the transfer portal.” Since Dec. 8, 29 players have entered the transfer portal after coach Charles Huff left the Thundering Herd to become head coach at Southern Miss. How about example No. 2? The House v. NCAA antit...
The Nebraska State Patrol has completed a season-long effort to keep fans safe as they travel to and from Husker football games. Troopers spent gamedays patrolling roadways, monitoring from the air and assisting with security in and around Memorial Stadium. On gamedays this fall, troopers made 54 arrests for driving under the influence. Troopers also issued 46 citations for speeding, 16 for driving under suspension, 19 open alcohol container, 12 no seat belt, and eight improper child restraint. Troopers also assisted 219 motorists in need of...

Unpopular opinion: Sportsmanship is best shown during competition, not during a five-second sound bite or video during a coin toss. That’s why I agree with the take by Nebraska sports writer Mitch Sherman from Friday’s Huskers versus Iowa game. “The Athletic” journalist asserts that the 60-minute football contest showed true sportsmanship. The pregame antics were pure hype. “They didn’t head hunt. They didn’t try to start fights or commit personal fouls. Common in rivalry games, those actions...

It’s time to go bowling ... and I’m not talking about rolling an eight-pound Columbia 300. I haven’t been to a bowl game since 1981. That’s a 43-year drought where I’ve had to watch bowl games from afar or, gasp, suffer without a post-season game for the ‘Skers. So stop complaining because it has been eight years since our boys of fall last competed in late December. Forty-three is almost half a century. That’s ... old. Saturday’s Husker win over the stinkin’ Wiscy Badgers secured a bowl bi...

It may seem cliché but one of the funniest Halloween costumes is the blind referee. If you’re a sports fan, the referee scenario undoubtedly has run through your mind. I’m not into conspiracy theories but ... At least six calls were missed during Saturday’s Nebraska-Ohio State football game, calls that could have given Nebraska a signature road win or handed Ohio State an even bigger margin of victory. Two of the most notable: the spot on Emmet Johnson’s first-down run that turned into a third...

Back in the day, the Omaha World-Herald provided me with a company car and the instructions: "Drive across the state and find some stories." It was obviously a more formal command than that, something like, "If you like your job, you'll write something interesting." It was an incredible adventure in various vintages of Ford Taurus'. On the road, you realize that there are fascinating stories – sometimes tragic and sad, sometimes heart-warming and uplifting – in every corner of the state. You rec...

When the Nebraska Huskers kick off the football season, Saturday at 2:30 p.m., fans will note several changes at Memorial Stadium. The biggest change will be how to pay for concession items, programs, stadium seats and merchandise. Keep the cash stashed. "All Husker athletic venues have now moved to cashless operations," Nebraska Athletic Department personnel reported. Volleyball and women's soccer, played at the Devaney Center and Hibner Stadium, respectively, will also move to cashless...

Another trip around the sun. SAM and I have that in common. In 2019, the inaugural issue of the Advocate-Messenger made its debut on my birthday. Now, we're starting our sixth year of publication, a feat that isn't lost on Scott and me. It's been a positive and encouraging journey. Oh sure, there have been days when we wonder what the heck we're doing ... luckily, those days are few and far between. We feel like we're on solid ground and are excited to keep building the quality publication you e...

Scotti Fullbright 1951-2024 Scotti Dean Fullbright, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, was promoted to his 'Long Home' on May 28, in Wichita, Kansas, after battling an infection in his body for several months. He was born June 3, 1951, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to parents Paul and Myrna (Wilcox) Fullbright. He was a rambunctious child by all accounts and his early life was punctuated by tragedy when his father passed away suddenly when he was just 13. In his high school years, his...
