The year 2020 caused us to slow down and realize what matters most. LuAnn Schindler, Publisher|Dec 31, 2020

History buff LuAnn is geeking out this week, racing to beat the clock to New Year’s Eve, when AMC-produced “Hell on Wheels” will be withdrawn from the Netflix repertoire. I’d seen advertisements for the western history series but hadn’t committed to view it, until my father-in-law made the suggestion. Scott and I have binge-watched four seasons and have 12 episodes to complete by Thursday. Hopefully, we’re on track. Even though my kids tell me I am older than dirt, I do not remember studying, i...

JERRY KANE Nebraska Game and Parks Commission Staying warm and comfortable while on the ice will go a long way toward ensuring you have a fun outing ice-fishing. The conditions will determine exactly how you will want to dress, but, regardless, you should dress in layers. The reason? You'll want to stay warm, and you'll need to avoid sweating. Getting set up for fishing – or moving to new fishing areas on the ice – is where you can work up a sweat. This includes carrying or dragging your gea...

  • The upside of 2020

Despite a pandemic that saw life around us change, not everything in 2020 was bad. Advocate-Messenger employees share a personal glimpse of the hope they experienced in 2020 and offer a wish for the new year. ~~~ One of the biggest signs of hope for me was being able to attend in-person classes at Wayne State College. With all the uncertainty in the world, it was a huge relief to know that colleges were taking one of the first steps to give some sense of normalcy to their students. Wish for...

  • Rise and Shine

    Terri Hahn|Dec 31, 2020

I know all too well how easy it is to either: 1) skip breakfast, or 2) grab something on the run that isn't exactly the most nutritious food in the world. When I do make time for breakfast, I have a tendency to grab a couple of frozen breakfast burritos or one of those sandwiches made up of a croissant, sausage patty, egg and cheese. I'm afraid to look at the nutrition label on either one. That alone should be my first clue I need to do a better job of choosing my breakfast menu. And with the...
