Summerland Public School BOARD OF EDUCATION

Dec. 14, 2022

Summerland Public School Board of Education held a regular meeting, Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2022, at the school.

President Ed Nordby called the meeting, which was advertised in the Dec. 7, 2022, newspapers to order at 5:46 p.m. Board members present: Candice Hoke, Marty Kerkman, Nordby, Nate Schwager, Steven Thiele and Jeremy Wagner.

Nordby noted the Open Meetings Act posted in the board room.

Motion by Thiele, seconded by Hoke, to approve the agenda as presented. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried 6-0.

Public participation. Public participation was not heard. Jacob Goldfuss and the FFA students were not present due to the weather. They will present next month.

Motion by Thiele, seconded by Kerkman, to approve the consent agenda. Unless removed from the consent agenda, items identified within the consent agenda will be acted on at one time, including minutes of the Nov. 15, 2022 meeting; and monthly financial report. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried 6-0.

Old business:

Discuss, consider and take all necessary action on the electric bus grant. Superintendent Finke presented the board with information concerning the electric bus grant and charging station. Motion by Thiele, seconded by Schwager, to accept the grant for the electric bus. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried 6-0.

New business:

Report on American civics Committee meeting. A report was given on the American civics Committee meeting that was held earlier tonight. The social studies curriculum is due to be updated later this year.

Discuss, consider and take all necessary action on proposed change to the December 2022 calendar. Finke and principal, Cathy Cooper, discussed the need for a staff work day. Motion by Hoke, seconded by Thiele, to allow Finke to make the call on Dec. 22 being a certified staff-only day or a regular day. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried 6-0.

District annual report. Finke presented the district annual report to the board.

Discuss, consider and take all necessary action to sell excess shop equipment. Motion by Thiele, seconded by Wagner, to sell the excess shop equipment as presented. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried 6-0.

Discuss potential Summerland School Foundation. Discussion was held concerning a potential Summerland School Foundation. More information will come at a later date.

NASB update. Finke gave the board a report on the state conference he recently attended He also updated them concerning NASB and KSB School Law’s superintendent evaluation instrument.

New board member Scott Thiele and Finke attended a new board member workshop in Norfolk today.

He also reported on proposed legislation and issues concerning public education.

Recognition of outgoing board members. Finke presented Candice Hoke and Marty Kerkman with a desk clock in appreciation of their years of service as school board members.

Administrative reports. Cooper presented information about MTSS, curriculum work, school improvement work, elementary Christmas concert, elementary student council.

Greg Appleby, high school principal, reported on winter activities, end of first semester, social emotional surveys, high school Christmas concert and teacher/coach evaluations.

Finke reported on healthy snack vending machine, commended county road officials for taking good care of the roads around the school, presentation on social media to students, meeting postponement protocols.

Discuss, consider and take all necessary action on administrative contracts. Motion by Kerkman, seconded by Hoke, to enter executive session at 6:59 to discuss administrative contracts and is necessary for the protection of needless injury to the reputation of any individuals. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried 6-0.

The board came out of executive session at 7:31 p.m.

The next regular board meeting will be Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2023, at 6:30 p.m. Nordby adjourned the meeting at 7:31 p.m.
