Falling flat • A bullrider tries to hold on for a qualifying run during Sunday evening competition at Clearwater's Big Rodeo. His dreams fell short after he was bucked off after a few seconds in the ring. Seven states were represented during the 54th annual event, June 25 to 27.
Contestants from seven states vied for $26,600 in prize money at Clearwater's 54th Big Rodeo, June 25 to 27.
Two hundred thirty-eight participants ventured to Clearwater from Iowa, South Dakota, Nebraska, Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma and Colorado.
No contestants qualified with an eight-second ride in bull riding.
Ty Kenner and Mike Fred split the top honors in bareback riding, with each scoring 76. Logan Glendy finished third, with 73. A three-way tie for fourth went to Rowdy Moon, Whitten Hoover and Tanner Rupprecht. All three scored 70.
Austin Hurlburt claimed the top spot in calf roping, in 9.1. Second place went to Dustin Schrunk, who finished with 9.5; third, Tanner Stec, 9.8 and fourth, Clete Scheer, 9.9. Lane Day and Austin Madison tied for fifth, with 10.1.
In the 45 and over calf roping, JL Spurgeon tied the calf in 11.4 to place first. A two-way tie between Jay Hollenbeck and Cooper Phillips landed them in second place. They finished in 12.3. A 13.8 run landed Tyler Gracey and Sid Miller in a tie for fourth.
Dustin Chohon and Wayne Sinney won team roping, with a 5.9. Andy Knott and Dalton Pelster ran 6.5, finishing second, while Grant Lindsley and Nathan Poss finished third, in 6.7. Finishing fourth, in 7.0, were Brady Joseph and Will Frerichs. Two teams tied for fifth, in 7.5, including Cody Hilzendeger and Dustin Harris and Kip Austin and Cole Austin.
Breakaway times were neck and neck. Brittni McCully took the top spot, with 2.2. Brandy Schaak and Lacy Camp ran 2.4 to finish in a tie for second place. Morgan Kessler finished fourth, in 2.5; Clare Kohl, fifth, 2.6 and Devan McAdow, sixth, in 2.7.
Two saddle bronc competitors took home prize money. Tristan Eklund scored 75 and won the event. Lane Whitelock finished second, with a 73.
The top four steer wrestling competitors were within a fraction of a second. Tyler Wreidt finished first, with a 5.5. Kyle Whitaker, Austin Madison and Hoyt Kraeger each finished in 5.7 for a three-way tie for second place. Trevor Haake ended fifth, in 7.1, while Kris Rasmussen's run finished in 7.7, to earn sixth place.
Dori Hallenbeck ran 15.33 to take home the barrel racing title. Cheryl Wallace finished in 15.7 to earn second place. Hilary Hilzendeger ran 15.74, finishing third; Brenna Kohle, fourth, in 15.8; Kellie Reichmuth ended fifth, with 15.98 and Gayle White, sixth, in 16.11.
