  • Perpetual easement public hearing set for Friday in O'Neill

    LuAnn Schindler, Publisher|Mar 30, 2023

Holt County Supervisors will hear public testimony, Friday, regarding the addition of Resolution 2021-32 to county zoning laws. As written, the resolution “would oppose the designation of lands in Holt County as wilderness, wilderness study areas, wildlife preserves, open space or other conservation easements that are perpetual in nature, thereby restricting public access to such lands and preventing the development and productive use of resources on or within such lands.” Friday’s heari...

  • Operation Blueprint:

    LuAnn Schindler, Publisher|Mar 30, 2023

Cole Gaughenbaugh didn't always know he would become a teacher. The O'Neill St. Mary's graduate envisioned life as a chiropractor and enrolled in classes at Wayne State College in the fall 2019 semester. Seven months later, the pandemic struck. "The whole world got thrown for a loop," he said. Gaughenbaugh packed his bags and headed home, to O'Neill, to finish classes. He contemplated returning to college, deciding to seek a business degree. Call it divine intervention - or the Master's plan -...

  • -Isms: Views on life in rural America

    LuAnn Schindler, Publisher|Mar 30, 2023

I’ve never considered myself a Jays fan. I couldn’t name any of the team members. Greg McDermott’s the coach, right? Kyle Korver is greatest example of what it means to bleed blue, right? (I did catch his inspirational locker room speech.) Over the weekend, though, for a short time, I balanced on the precipice of becoming a Jaysker. I didn’t take the deep dive, though. My tribe of Husker fanatics kept me in check. A screenshot of Nebraska’s 63-53 victory over the Bluejays, on Dec. 4, provided...

  • Four more years, proposal would add one more term to limits

    J.L. Schmidt, Statehouse Correspondent Nebraska Press Association|Mar 30, 2023

Just one more term. Yes, lawmakers are once again considering giving themselves 12 years instead of eight to figure out how things work and try to do something for their constituents. On a good day, I think term limits should be eliminated as they were until 2006. On a bad day, I think a monthly contract seems too gracious for some of the babbling, bumbling idiotic things that state senators do. Norfolk Sen. Robert Dover has offered LR22CA, a proposed constitutional amendment that potentially...

  • Medical school journey

    Samantha Darnall-Werlinger M.D.|Mar 30, 2023

It has been nine years since my medical school acceptance. I can describe my personal process in two words: arduous and lengthy. Now, this may not be the case for all people who apply to medical school. A few individuals may be able to apply directly out of undergrad and be accepted. I'll speak from my experience which had a few more detours involved. I am the first person in my family to become a physician. This added unique challenges while applying to medical school - I essentially had to bla...

  • New Mystery Remembering Nebraska's forgotten "whodunit queen"

    Carson Vaughan, Flatwater Free Press|Mar 30, 2023

When reporter Eva Mahoney arrived in Valentine in 1930 to profile America’s next great mystery novelist, she found Mignon Good Eberhart in a “pleasant little home,” struggling to visualize her next murder. Bewitched by her new surroundings, the big skies and grassy dunes, the author had contrived a remote hunting lodge in the Nebraska Sandhills as the site for her fictional crime. It had log doors, “a great, deep fireplace made of native, unfinished rock,” Eberhart wrote, and a hodgepodge of antique pewter lamps, a quirk of the cabin’s late own...

According to the National Pork Board, around 70% of Americans serve ham for Easter each year. But there is much more to know about it than "half or whole?" or "bone-in or boneless?" Here are answers to some frequently asked questions: Do I need a whole or a half ham? And how much ham will I need? A whole ham typically weighs more than 10 pounds.
