Fan favorite • Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park receives the Nebraska Passport Champion's Choice Award, last week, at the Celebrate Nebraska Awards Banquet, in Gering.

A popular northeast Nebraska tourist spot received recognition last week during the annual Nebraska Tourism Conference held in Gering.

Ashfall Fossil Bed State Historical Park, located northwest of Royal, was named the recipient of the Nebraska passport Champion's Choice Award.

The award was presented during the Celebrate Nebraska Awards Banquet, Oct. 19, in Gering.

Individuals who took part in the 2023 Nebraska passport program voted for their favorite place included in the passport. This year's program included 70 stops.

According to the Nebraska Tourism Commission, the Ashfall site gives visitors a unique opportunity to "see the past frozen in the present day."

"Fossilized animals are resting in place at an ancient Waterhole where a volcanic eruption millions of years ago covered them. Passporters enjoyed learning the history of the area, as well as seeing in-progress excavations that still happen to this day," according to state tourism officials.

The historical park covers 360 acres in the Verdigre Creek valley and includes the Hubbard Rhino Barn and a visitor's center.
