Jorden Cox participated in Tshirt design at the March 1 SkillsUSA Middle School Conference in Grand Island.

What do a camera, hammer, computer, fireman, airplane, whisk, medical symbol and robot all have in common?

"They represent events available through SkillsUSA," said Jorden Cox, a seventh-grade student at Summerland Public School.

Cox incorporated those design elements inside an outline of the state of Nebraska as part of the T-shirt design competition at the conference.

Elements of design • A T-shirt, designed by Jorden Cox, outlines career opportunities available for investigation through SkillsUSA. He was required to add "Nebraska" and "SkillsUSA" on the design. Use of the conference theme was optional.

He said he chose the event because he has assisted his mom, Courtney Soper, proprietor of Naptime Kreations, make T-shirts.

He used Adobe InDesign to add all the design elements. According to the rules, Cox also needed to incorporate "Nebraska" and SkillsUSA somewhere on the design.

Using a 100% polyester T-shirt, Cox used a sublimation printer to produce the final product.

For the contest, he presented his design in RGB, CMYK and pantone color schemes, showed the final product, outlined the design process and answered questions about the design.

Rules state the design is limited to use of four colors.

He said, "None of the competition is easy. There's a lot of work involved."

Explaining advantages of being a member of SkillsUSA, Cox said, "It's a way to look at different careers and try different events.
