Clearwater officials recently received a surprise they weren't expecting. Property owned by the village, from the little baseball field, south to the tree dump, is not in village limits. "How are they not in city limits when the dump is owned by the city?" Trustee Marsha Hart asked during the Aug. 12 board meeting. Chairman Kelly Kerkman said it was never annexed in. Village clerk Angie Hupp explained how she made the discovery. In past years, lane mile reports submitted by the village's street...
Driving north on Highway 14, one may be inclined to stop and smell the roses. Rylee Wagner, proprietor of Wild Arrow Farms, hopes you stop to smell the zinnias, sunflowers, snapdragons and other floral varieties at her you-pick flower farm, located at 87544 Highway 14 near Winnetoon. For $20, visitors to the not-so-secret garden can cut stems and fill a 20-ounce cup, creating their own bouquet. Wagner also offers made-for-you bouquets. She recently organized a you-pick fundraiser for a family...
I opened the wooden recipe box sitting on the kitchen counter the other day and was transported to my childhood. It’s funny how reading recipes in your mom’s and grandmothers’ handwriting makes you long for certain foods. The first recipe out of the box listed ingredients in mom’s seven-minute frosting: egg whites, sugar, water, white corn syrup, salt and vanilla. I can see her standing at the stove, laboring over a double boiler, using a hand mixer to whip the concoction until peaks formed. It was a delicious final touch on her homemad...

Another trip around the sun. SAM and I have that in common. In 2019, the inaugural issue of the Advocate-Messenger made its debut on my birthday. Now, we're starting our sixth year of publication, a feat that isn't lost on Scott and me. It's been a positive and encouraging journey. Oh sure, there have been days when we wonder what the heck we're doing ... luckily, those days are few and far between. We feel like we're on solid ground and are excited to keep building the quality publication you e...
A bale of turtles, all sizes and species, stood in the spotlight, Saturday, during turtle races at Page Community Day. After Page Fire and Rescue chief Rod Isom cooled the cement racing ring with a dowsing of crisp water, box turtles, painted turtles and a red-eared slider moved like a herd of turtles toward the chalky neon pink finish line. Following heat races and a championship run, three reptiles crushed the competition, earning trophies for their trainers. Levi Schlem's entry was the...
