    LuAnn Schindler|Nov 20, 2024

The road to Lincoln and an opportunity to play for a Class D1 state championship ended for the Bobcats after a 48-34 loss to defending champs, Stanton. The semifinal match up, played on the Bobcat's home turf, saw Summerland score first on an 11-play, 72-yard drive orchestrated by senior quarterback Michael Koenig. The Bobcats led at the top of each quarter and were poised to score again when the Stanton's Becker Pohlman intercepted a pass from the Mustang five yard line and returned it to...

  • Rodeo Roots

    LuAnn Schindler|Nov 13, 2024

When Larry and Judy Parker moved to Clearwater in 1965, little did they know they would spark the idea for one of the hottest rodeo tickets in Nebraska. On Nov. 9, Clearwater Chamber of Commerce honored the Judy Parker, the late Larry Parker and Steve Patras, of Clearwater, for orchestrating the first Clearwater Rodeo in 1967 and named the new building on the grounds the Double P Tack Room. Larry Parker died in 2004, in an automobile accident near Mission, South Dakota. During Saturday's event,...

What is known at this time is that Nate Schwager, the only candidate listed on the ballot, unofficially received 487 votes in Antelope County, 345 in Holt County, 13 in Knox County and 12 in Wheeler County. If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, which song would you choose? I hope this scenario doesn’t play out. Ever. Music is one of my top three learning styles, woven into the fabric of everyday instances. Let’s face it, it’s practically one of my love languages, forging a bond that strikes a right chord, creating harmony on all levels. When Plato wrote, “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything,” I wonder wh...

Be kind. That’s it. Pretty simple, right? Be kind. Stop spreading rumors about others. Stop the trash talk. Stop trying to make yourself feel better by putting others down. Stop being a bully. You are responsible for your happiness. You are responsible for your actions. Want the world to be a better place? Be genuine. Be kind....

It may seem cliché but one of the funniest Halloween costumes is the blind referee. If you’re a sports fan, the referee scenario undoubtedly has run through your mind. I’m not into conspiracy theories but ... At least six calls were missed during Saturday’s Nebraska-Ohio State football game, calls that could have given Nebraska a signature road win or handed Ohio State an even bigger margin of victory. Two of the most notable: the spot on Emmet Johnson’s first-down run that turned into a third...

It will be the second time in six days the teams have faced off. On Friday, the Bobcats traveled to Tilden and picked up a 55-12 win, boosting the season record to 7-1. As I'm writing this, two weeks stand between now and Nov. 5, the general election. I don't often write about politics. A long time ago, in J school, a professor shared a belief that in community journalism, it's best to let the public make their own decisions. Present the facts. Neighbors don't need to tell neighbors how to vote, she would say. Let the big city dailies endorse a candidate. Here, in small-town America, let residents investigate and research candidates and issues and form an...

In other business, Hupp told trustees the village’s utility program hadbeen switched to the new system. “It was supp...

  • Sacrifice, service lauded at Veterans Park fundraiser

    LuAnn Schindler, Publisher|Oct 16, 2024

When life comes full circle, pay attention. Usually, there's a lesson worth learning. The lesson starts in Clearwater where Adam Ahlers, a "snot-nosed brat kid" spent summers mowing the yard at the Ocea Kirchner residence. Kirchner, a widow, would invite Ahlers into her "little yellow house" after he finished the job. "I had to go to the front door and get my $10," Ahlers told a crowd of approximately 275 people attending Saturday's fundraiser for the Clearwater Veteran's Park, held at the...

  • -Isms: Views on life in rural America

One of my favorite play scripts is “First Night” by Jack Neary. In it, Danny Fleming, a video store clerk, sees his eighth-grade crush, Meredith O’Connor (who is now a nun), enter the store. What ensues is a roller coaster of emotions from puppy love to midlife angst. The play answers questions: Does he still love her? Is she in love with him? After 20 years, will she leave the convent to build a life with the man of her dreams? The best line first comes from Danny, talking about Mered...

    LuAnn Schindler, Publisher|Oct 9, 2024

One. That's the number by which enrollment at Summerland Public Schools dropped for the 2024-25 school year.
