New traffic law in effect September 3

Updated traffic rules and heavier fines for breaking them go into effect Sept. 3.

The move-over law previously applied only to emergency and roadside assistance vehicles.

With the Nebraska Legislature's passage of LB 530, an omnibus public safety bill introduced by Omaha Sen. Kathleen Kauth, state law will require drivers to slow down or move over when approaching any stopped vehicle or "vulnerable road users" on the side of the highway.

"This includes pedestrians, bicyclists, people in crosswalks, and agricultural vehicles or equipment,"' Nebraska Department of Transportation officials said....
