Kester, Thiele, Umphress advance to state

Summerland boys' wrestling team finished fifth in the Class D -3 District in Pleasanton, Friday and Saturday. Three wrestlers will compete this week at the state championships in Omaha.

Ethan Kester finished second in the 138-pound division. He defeated Heath Henson, SEM by tech fall and pinned Jackson Hulls, Meridian, before losing by fall to Gatlin Krepela, Pleasanton, in the first-place match.

Jesse Thiele earned district silver in the 144-pound class. He worked his way through the bracket with pins over Hector Garcia, Scribner-Snyder, and a 3-2 decision over Gavin Presitt, North Central. In the championship, Thiele lost 7-5 to Gage Friesen, High Plains.

Wrestling at 157, Matt Umphress finished fourth. He opened by pinning Kade Wiiest, NC and Ryan Linkous, Pender, before losing by fall to JD Adam, Meridian. Umphress survived the heartbreak round by pinning Carson Tomasek, Stanton. He lost to Jorgan Condon, Creighton, in the third-place match.

Other Bobcats competing in district competition were Ayden Bazelman, Tucker Dougherty, Austin Mendoza, Ethan Kester, Connor Thomson, Logan Kester, Shayne Jenkins, AJ Hobbs and Jason Shaver.
