Summerland Public School BOARD OF EDUCATION

Jan. 17, 2024

Summerland Public School Board of Education met in regular session, Wednesday, Jan. 17, at 7 p.m., in the board meeting room.

President Steve Thiele called the meeting, which was advertised in the Jan. 10, 2024, newspapers, to order at 7 p.m.

Thiele noted the Open Meetings Act posted in the board room.

Roll call was taken, with all board members present: Ed Nordby, Nate Schwager, Scott Thiele, Steve Thiele, Austin Twibell, Jeremy Wagner.

Thiele read the "Written Acceptance of Office" which was signed by all board members.

Discuss, consider and take all necessary action on board officers and committees. The following committees were formed for 2024:

Americanism: Steve Thiele, Wagner, Scott Thiele

Finance/negotiations - Twibell, Schwager, Nordby

Building, grounds/transportation: Steve Thiele, Wagner, Scott Thiele

Goals/strategic planning: Steve Thiele, Schwager, Wagner.

There were no changes made to the following:

Recording secretary - Sally Finch

Newspapers - Summerland Advocate Messenger, Antelope County News, Norfolk Daily News

Depositories: Bank of Orchard, Cornerstone Bank, Ewing Bank, Nebraska Liquid Asset Fund

Motion by Schwager, seconded by Wagner to retain the 2023 board officers for 2024 which are: Steve Thiele, president; Schwager, vice president; Twibell, secretary; and Wagner, treasurer. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Motion carried 6-0.

Review the role and responsibilities of board members. Superintendent Finke reviews the board policies concerning their role and responsibilities.

Approve agenda. Motion by Scott Thiele, seconded by Twibell to approve the agenda as presented. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Motion carried 6-0.

Public participation was not heard.

Motion by Schwager, seconded by Nordby to approve the consent agenda items. Unless removed from the consent agenda, items identified within the consent agenda are acted on at one time. Items included: minutes of the Dec. 13, 2023, meeting; minutes of the Dec. 20, 2023, special meeting; minutes of the Jan. 9 2024, workshop; monthly financial report. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Motion carried 6-0.

Old business:

Discuss, consider and take action on authorizing membership in a new activity conference. Supt. Finke reported on the schools that have voted to go forward with the formation of the new conference. Those schools are Laurel-Concord-Coleridge, Atkinson West Holt, Plainview, Tilden Elkhorn Valley, Hartington-Newcastle and Neligh-Oakdale. The Lutheran High Northeast board meeting is next week. Some discussion was held.

Motion by Twibell, seconded by Schwager, to authorize and support our administrative team to work collaboratively to develop a new activity conference to commence in the 2025-2026 school year. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Motion carried 6-0.

Discussion of the superintendent search process. President Thiele reported that since the timeline has been moved back, the stakeholder's survey will be published in the newspapers next week.

New business:

Discuss, consider and take all necessary action on staff resignations:

Motion by Schwager, seconded by Nordby, to accept the resignation of Mike Tabbert as a bus driver, effective Jan 31, 2024. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Motion carried 6-0.

Motion by Nordby, seconded by Scott Thiele, to accept the resignation of Christine Thoendel as cook, effective Feb. 2. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Motion carried 6-0.

Report on Transportation Committee meeting. Supt. Finke and members of the Transportation Committee reported on their meeting prior to the regular meeting.

Motion by Wagner, seconded by Twibell, to purchase a 2023 van from Moody Motor with ESSER III funds. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Motion carried 6-0.

NASB update. Supt. Finke reported that on Monday, he will be attending the Legislative Update Conference in Lincoln and will have a report at the next meeting on legislation concerning education.

Administrative reports:

Mrs. Cooper, elementary principal: MTSS, winter workshop, report cards.

Mr. Rosenboom, high school principal/AD: MTSS, report cards, district NSAA meeting.

Mr. Finke, superintendent: Reminder to incumbents of the filing deadline, snow days, school foundation, WSC teacher fair.

The next regular board meeting will be Monday, Feb. 12, 2024, at 7 p.m.

President Thiele adjourned the meeting at 7:48 p.m.
