Bobcat girl grapplers find continued success at Winnebago Invite

Summerland girls' wrestling team finished ninth in team standings at the Dec. 28 Winnebago Lady Indian Invite.

Thirty-seven teams from Nebraska and South Dakota participated in the one-day event, which saw Norfolk take home the team title. Omaha Westside finished in the runner-up position.

Nine Bobcat wrestlers finished in the top six in their weight classes in varsity and junior varsity competition.

Ava Cleveland worked through the championship bracket in the 110-pound class and finished second. She started with pins over Olivia Hackler, Fairbury, in 1:26; Aurora Hinman, Hemingford, in :28 and Jolyn Pozehl, Ainsworth. In the quest for first, Cleveland lost by fall, in 1:44, to Madelynn Bohnet, SSC.

Competing in the 115-pound junior varsity division, Ashlyn Galvin dropped a 13-7 decision to Dezie Miller, Westside, in the third-place match. Her path to that match began with a win by fall, in 1:39, over Esmeralda Munoz-Vega, South Sioux City, and a loss by fall, in 2:40, to Norfolk's Chloe Boyer.

Savannah Gallagher placed sixth in the 120-pound class. After pinning Wayne's Macy Wilson, in 1:44, Gallagher lost, 11-1, to Gracie Wortman, Randolph. In he consolation bracket, Gallagher pinned Megan Magnuson, Wayne, in 3:20 and Lesly Sanchez, West Point-Beemer, in 2:22.

In the consolation semifinal, Felycia Kerkman, West Holt, pinned Gallagher in 2:11, setting up a rematch against Wortman, who won the fifth-place match by fall, in 3:48.

In the 120-pound junior varsity division, Beatriz Milkem earned silver. She opened by pinning Ainsworth's Nelly Hoche in 2:17 and Bennington's Deseret Coles, in :59. In the championship match, Lauren Garner, Hemingford, pinned Milkem in 1:40.

Kaylee Thiele ended in fourth place in the 135-pound division. After pinning LilyAnn Willing, Tekamah-Herman, in :31, West Holt's Madison Davis pinned the Summerland freshman in 1:29. Thiele worked her way through the consolation bracket, pinning Cici Stashkiw-Risor, in :48; Jessalyn Fay, Valentine, in 2:24; and Rylan Hansen, Stanton, in 3:57. In the third-place match, Thiele faced Davis again and lost by fall, in 1:00.

Abby Arroyo ended in fifth place in the 140-pound junior varsity division. Arroyo lost to Brinley Kerkman, West Holt, in 3:29 in round one and rebounded with a win by fall, in 1:36, over Madisen Meek, Hemingford. In the semifinal, she lost by fall, in 4:26 to Bailey Kemnitz, Bon Homme/Scotland/Avon. That set up a fifth-place match against Lyons Decatur Northeast's Adorai Salazar. Arroyo won by fall, in 1:23.

Kyah Bruhn claimed first place in the 170-pound junior varsity class. She was flawless, with a win by fall, over Tomi Li Scott, Winnebago, in 1:42; a 5-2 decision over SSC's Yesenia Ma Reyes Aragon and a win by pin over Brooke Carey, WH, in :18.

Wrapped up • Abby Arroyo grabs the arm of Brinley Kerkman and attempts to get out of a leg lock. The two wrestlers competed in a junior varsity match in the 140-pound division, Friday, at the Winnebago Girls' Invite. Arroyo finished fifth in competition.

Ammy Arroyo placed sixth in the 190-pound class. After a bye, she lost by fall, in 2:26, to Zulema Godinez, SSC. That bumped her to the consolation bracket, where she had two byes before pinning Raegan Mangelsen, Norfolk, in 1:51. In the consolation semifinal, Hailey O'Brien, Fremont, pinned Arroyo in 3:33. In the battle for fifth, Kennedy Blevins, LDNE, won by medical forfeit.

Raina Krebs ended in sixth place in the 235-pound division. Following a first-round bye, Krebs pinned JaeLeigh Tuttle, LDNE, in 3:09. In the semifinal round, Krebs lost by fall, in 2:52, to Caitlyn Sohm, SSC. Krebs moved into the consolation semifinal, where she lost by medical forfeit to Lizbeth Gonzalez, WPB. The fifth-place match was a rematch against Tuttle, who won, due to medical forfeit.

The Bobcat girls' are scheduled to compete, Thursday, in an invite in Columbus. The invite is slated to begin at 9:30 a.m.
