Summerland Public School BOARD OF EDUCATION

Nov. 14, 2023

Summerland Public School Board of Education met in regular session, Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2023, at 6 p.m., in the school’s board room.

President Steve Thiele called the meeting, which was advertised in the Nov. 8 papers, to order at 6 p.m. Thiele noted the Open Meetings Act posted in the board room.

Roll call was taken. All board members were present: Ed Nordby, Nate Schwager, Scott Thiele, Steve Thiele, Austin Twibell, Jeremy Wagner.

Motion by Wagner, seconded by Twibell, to approve the agenda as presented. Aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: 0. Motion carried.

Public participation. Public participation was not heard.

Presentation of the 2023 audit by Marcy Luth, via phone call. Auditor Marcy Luth presented the 2022-2023 audit to the board via a phone call.

Presentation by Multi-tiered System of Supports co-chairs. MTSS co-chairmen, Carrie Kucera and Kendra Shrader, were present to update the board on the MTSS process in grades 7-12.

Motion by Scott Thiele, seconded by Ed Nordby, to approve the consent agenda items. Unless removed from the consent agenda, items identified within the consent agenda will be acted on at one time, including minutes of the Oct. 16, 2023, meeting and monthly financial report. Aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: 0. Motion carried.

Discuss the strategic planning process. Superintendent Finke reported that the survey was deployed. The surveys need to be completed by Dec. 1. The survey QR code flyers have been distributed to all three communities and will be in the newspapers this week.

New business:

Discuss, consider and take all necessary action on the 2022-2023 school audit. Motion by Nordby, seconded by Schwager, to approve the 2022-2023 fiscal year audit as presented. Aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: 0. Motion carried.

Discuss, consider and take all necessary action on policy updates. Motion by Twibell, seconded by Schwager, to update the Library Materials Challenged section of Policy #6037 as presented on first reading, waving the second reading. Aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: 0. Motion carried.

Discuss the superintendent evaluation process. Supt. Finke reported he has completed his self evaluation, which will be compiled by NASB and sent out to board members in the next couple of days. Board members will then complete their evaluation materials and all results will be sent to the board president. The goal will be to have the process completed by the December board meeting.

NASB update.

Supt. Finke will be attending the State School Board’s Conference, in Omaha, Wednesday through Friday of this week.

Administrative reports:

Mrs. Cooper, elementary principal: Title 1 Grab & Go breakfast with grandparents, Scholastic Book Fair, MTSS (Halloween, Data Day, World Kindness Day), ESU 8 grade-level inservice, SchoolStore, standard response protocol.

Mr. Rosenboom, high school principal: Standard response protocol, fall activities, winter activities, District III update, football schedule, FFA National Convention.

Mr. Finke, superintendent: EOP, activity conferences, electric bus, upcoming release of test scores, negotiations.

The next regular board meeting will be Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2023, at 7 p.m.

President Thiele adjourned the meeting at 7:39 p.m.
