Summerland SCHOOL BOARD OF EDUCATION

Sept. 12, 2023

Summerland Public School Board of Education met in regular session, immediately following the tax request hearing, Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2023.

President Steve Thiele called the meeting, which was advertised in the Sept. 6, 2023, newspapers, to order at 5:17 p.m. Thiele noted the Open Meetings Act posted in the boardroom.

Roll call was taken. Present: Ed Nordby, Nate Schwager, Scott Thiele, Steve Thiele, Austin Twibell, Jeremy Wagner. All board members present.

Motion by Nordby, seconded by Twibell to approve the agenda as presented. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried.

Public participation. There was no public participation.

Consent agenda. Motion by Nordby, seconded by Wagner, to approve the consent agenda items. Unless removed from the consent agenda, items identified within the consent agenda will be acted on at one time: minutes of the Aug. 14, 2023, meeting and monthly financial report. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried.

Old business:

Discuss, consider and take all necessary action on the storage shed. Superintendent Finke is in the process of getting some more estimates on costs. The Building and Grounds Committee will meet to decide what exactly the building should or should not include. Discussion also included the possibility of selling the storage building in Clearwater.

New business:

Discuss, consider and take all necessary action to approve the 2023-2024 budget. Motion by Schwager, seconded by Steve Thiele, to approve the 2023-24 budget, which was published in the Sept. 6, 2023, newspapers, for all funds as presented. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried.

Discuss, consider and take all necessary action on the 2023-2024 tax requests. Motion by Nordby, seconded by Scott Thiele, to approve the 2023-2024 property tax resolution no. 2023-2024. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried.

Discuss, consider and take all necessary action on staffing. Motion by Wagner, seconded by Steve Thiele, to approve a work agreement for Kathryn Strope as a cook for the 2023-2024 school year. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried.

Discuss, consider and take all necessary action on option enrollment policy and resolution. Motion by Nordby, seconded by Schwager, to approve the enrollment policy and the 2024-2025 option enrollment resolution. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried.

NASB update. The state education conference is coming up in November. Registration opens Sept. 13.

Administrative reports: Cathy Cooper, elementary principal: NSCAS growth, MAP growth testing, elementary inservice, MTSS, emergency drills, homecoming.

Zach Rosenboom, high school principal: NASCAS growth, MAP growth testing, MTSS, parent teacher conferences, emergency drills, activities.

Kyle Finke, superintendent: Policy on “no animals” on the premises, bus route concerns, spirit group, ESU superintendent’s meeting, Emergency Operations Planning Committee meeting.

The next regular board meeting will be Monday, Oct. 16, 2023, at 6 p.m.

President Thiele adjourned the meeting at 6:10 p.m.
