Make a splash at the Holt County Fair

Holt County Ag Society has announced its 2023 4-H and fair schedule. Events will begin Saturday, Aug. 5 with 4-H shooting sports action and end Saturday, Aug. 12, at the fairgrounds in Chambers.

4-H shooting sports participants will register Saturday, beginning at 8 a.m., with competition in trap, .22, small bore pistol and muzzle loading scheduled to start at 9.

On Sunday, shooting sports participants will compete for bragging rights and ribbons in BB gun, air rifle, air pistol and archery, at 9 a.m. Check-in for the day starts at 8 a.m., with events taking place in the show barn.

Monday, Aug. 7

Check-in for three 4-H shows, featuring cats and pocket pets will begin at 8 a.m.

Want to see cuddly kittens and perky puppies? A chance awaits at 8:30 a.m., as the Clover Kid and 4-H Cat Show will be held.

Pocket pets will also be shown at 8:30 a.m.

At 8:30 a.m., check-in will be held for the Clover Kid and 4-H Dog Show.

Competition is slated to begin at 9:30 a.m., at the .22 shooting sports range, with agility competition.

At noon, the Open Class Dog Show will take place.

Tuesday, Aug. 8

Tuesday is horse day at the fair, with multiple events scheduled for the 4-H Horse Show.

Contestants may begin checking in at 7:30 a.m., with showmanship, pleasure, horsemanship, reining, trail, barrels, poles, working ranch horse and roping events starting at 8:30 p.m.

Wednesday, Aug. 9

Entry day for Clover Kid projects, as well as static events, will take place on Aug. 9.

Clover Kid exhibits will be judged from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Static 4-H projects will be entered from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with interviews scheduled in the same time period.

All open class exhibits may be checked in between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., in the open class building.

Junior open class interviews will be held between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

On Wednesday evening, all market hogs must be in place by 7 p.m., with weigh-ins slated for 7 to 8 p.m.

Sheep and meat goats will be in livestock barns by 8 p.m., with weigh-ins planned from 8 to 9 p.m.

Thursday, Aug. 10

The 4-H Market Hog Show will kick off Thursday events, in the show arena, at 9 a.m.

At the same time, market beef cattle will be weighed in.

At 11 a.m., Clover Kid contestants will show meat goats, followed by the 4-H bottle meat goatsand meat goat shows.

Bottle lamb projects will be on parade at 1 p.m., or immediately following the meat goat show. Next up will be 4-H participants showing bottle lambs and sheep.

At 3 p.m., all animal exhibits, except stocker feed calves, junior breeding heifers, producing dairy cows and producing dairy goats will be in place in the livestock barns.

So, you think you can judge animals? Sign up for the livestock judging contest, in the show arena. Check-in is slated to begin at 4 p.m., or immediately following the sheep show.

Cirque Adventure will present a 30-minute western/country-themed show, with the time to be announced. The interactive event features aerial acts, trampoline feats, slack wire acts, contortion, acrobatics, stilting, juggling and object manipulation.

River City Carnival will be on site, through Saturday. There will be no charge for rides, according to fair organizers.

4-H livestock exhibitors planning to participate in the bonus auction will need to sign up by 6 p.m.

Thursday evening's show will take place in front of the grandstands. Mutton busting will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by a ranch rodeo.

Friday, Aug. 11

Calves and cattle will take center stage on Friday. Weigh-in for feeder cattle will run from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m.

Bucket calf participants will compete interviews between 7:30 a.m. and noon.

The 4-H Beef Show will begin at 8:30, with stocker feeder calves and beef, as well as junior breeding heifers.

Open class bucket calves will need to be in place by 8:30 a.m. Three and four year olds may sign up for peewee beef showmanship by noon. The two competitions will start at the completion of the beef show.

The 4-H Bucket Calf Show will begin at 1 p.m.

All cattle exhibits will be released at 5 p.m.

The annual market livestock bonus action will begin at 5 p.m., in the show arena.

Cirque Adventure will present three 30-minute shows at 4, 6 and 8 p.m.

Stop by the annual barbecue at 5:30 p.m. A freewill donation will be accepted.

Youngsters interested in mutton busting will have an opportunity to test their skills, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

A new event, the Amped Up Pro Bull Riding Tour, will feature top professionals in the business trying to hold on for an eight-second ride.

The company, based in Warrensburg, Missouri, is owned by Isaiah and Ashley Dunn.

Evening entertainment concludes with a beer garden and music from the Casey Meussingman Band.

Saturday, Aug. 12

The final day of the fair will feature producing dairy cows and dairy goats. Animals will be in place by 8 a.m.

Champion and reserve champion in all breed classes of stocker feeder calves and beef junior breeding heifers will be in place, in livestock barns, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The dairy show will begin at 9 a.m., with Clover Kids showing dairy goat projects. The 4-H bottle dairy goat and dairy goat shows will follow.

Check out a variety of rabbits, starting at 9:30 a.m., as the Clover Kid rabbit projects will be presented. The 4-H Rabbit Show will start immediately upon the conclusion of the Clover Kid show.

Poultry projects will also be presented by Clover Kid and 4-H exhibitors, near the poultry and rabbit building, beginning at 9:30 a.m.

The 4-H Dairy Show will begin in the livestock arena at 10 a.m.

A round robin competition will begin at 1 p.m.

Shooting sports awards will be presented during a 2:30 p.m. award ceremony in the show barn.

Cirque Adventure will present three 30-minute shows at 2, 4 and 6 p.m.

A kids' pedal pull is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.

All open-class exhibits will be released at 4 p.m.

A rib cook-off is scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m., while ribs last.

At 5 p.m., all 4-H exhibits will be released.

Watch the smash-'em-up action during the demolition derby, scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.

The fair will conclude with music provided by Midnight Rodeo Band.

Ticket prices for evening entertainment are $10 for adults and $5 for children. Youngsters four and under are free to all events.
