Some area residents have taken part in the Cornhusker State Games in the past, as well as this summer.

Jeff Shabram, of Orchard, has taken powerlifters to compete in the past. In fact, Shabram mentioned he remembers Dave Mlnarik making an appearance when his nephew, Cade, competed in powerlifting.

"We'd still be taking participants, but can't since the director changed powerlifting affiliation from Amateur Athletic Union to USA powerlifting, which has more adults," remarked Shabram. "But it was always a fun day, especially since powerlifting was the day after opening day and we'd always try and get down there to see opening day."

Shabram also commented that it was a good day since kids would bring home some hardware.

Other local residents who brought home some hardware are the Whiting brothers, of Ewing. Asher and Gavin participated in this summer's games Friday, July 21, competing in shot and discus.

Older brother, Gavin, placed silver in the discus and bronze in the shot, while Asher, brought home gold in the shot and bronze in the discus.

This wasn't Gavin's first year competing. He competed last year as well, getting to compete up close against Sam Cappos, who now throws at Arizonia State University.

Gavin commented, "I throw mainly because I enjoy it and want to continue to improve at it and having a competition in the summer really shows how far lifting and practicing can get you and where I'm at in terms of where I want to be by the time track season rolls around next year."

The brothers had to take their own shots and disks, having to have them weighed before the competition.

All the track events were held at Lincoln High.

The boys' mom, Tricia stated, "I love how CSG celebrates all ages and levels. We were watching the running events while we waited, and there are 80+ year olds competing. Some are amazing and absolutly kill it. You can tell they train. Others go at a snail's pace, but it doesn't matter at all."

There are many events that locals could consider competing in, ranging from individual to duo to team events.

When asked, Asher commented that he'd like to compete in fishing competitions in the future, while Gavin hopes they bring the javelin back next year, but he is thinking seriously about entering the powerlifting competition. and stated, "I love how CSG (Cornhusker State
