Jury trial set for Norfolk man accused of assault

Doug E. Lewis, 57, of Norfolk appeared in the Antelope County courtroom in Neligh on May 3 for pretrial hearing, alongside his attorney Ron Temple of Norfolk. Lewis is charged with Count I, third-degree assault, a Class 1 misdemeanor, and Count II, disturbing the peace, a Class 3 misdemeanor, both alleged Aug. 21, 2022, in Tilden. Temple requested a trial date be set, although he said the case may still be resolved. Jury selection and trial are set June 2.

Gaylen L. Dredge, 60, of Neligh faced Taylor, accused of driving during revocation, a Class 2 misdemeanor alleged March 20. Dredge waived his right to counsel and pleaded guilty. However, after some discussion, Taylor allowed him to withdraw the plea and continued the case to allow him time to obtain his license. Further arraignment is set June 6. Dredge was cited by a Nebraska State Patrol officer March 20 east of Brunswick on Highway 20.

Robbie Evans, 43, of Elgin appeared for arraignment on two misdemeanor counts of violating Elgin’s public nuisance ordinance. Elgin city attorney Luke Henderson was not present but one of his partners, Frederick Bartell, who was in the courthouse as counsel for a client in another case, agreed to handle prosecution duties on Henderson’s behalf. Evans waived his right to counsel and pleaded guilty to both counts. However, after further discussion, Bartell agreed to dismiss one count. Evans said he understood that used tires stored on a lot near his Elgin business are unsightly but he can only get rid of them at certain times which makes it an ongoing problem. Evans also told Taylor a fence would be an expensive option at this time. He said both counts, one for a March 9 violation and one for a March 22 violation, were for the same tires.

Taylor set sentencing for July 5.
