Summerland students qualify for state finance challenge

This school year, students in the Summerland personal finance class took part in the Nebraska Personal Finance Challenge.

Ashley Melcher, Kelton Bruhn and Jesse Thiele earned a spot to compete in Lincoln on April 14. The trio competed against the top three teams that took the fall challenge and the top teams from the spring challenge.

Schools that participated Friday, in addition to Summerland, were Millard North, Ravenna, Hyannis, and two teams from Waverly.

According to business instructor Patty Sukup, each team was given a hypothetical family scenario.

Teams had have two hours to create a presentation on their financial recommendations for the family.

Then, each team had 10 minutes to present its financial plan, followed by five minutes of questions and answer time with a panel of expert judges, community members and financial experts.
