School board approves new hires

Expanded curriculum opportunities explained

April 20, 2023

A new addition to the Summerland teaching staff was announced Monday.

During the monthly board of education meeting, Danielle Birch, of O'Neill, was hired as a math instructor, for the 2023-2024 school year.

Superintendent Kyle Finke indicated her hiring would allow additional math and science classes that will benefit students.

"If we hire an additional math instructor, we would be able to offer a dual-credit math class. We could move some junior high science classes around to another instructor," Finke said.

Science instructor krista holliday will be able to offer additional courses, including a dual-credit physics class, introduction to health or medical terminology.

Carrie Kucera will continue to implement the junior/senior high multitiered system of supports program.

An additional section of pre-algebra will be offered for eighth-grade students.

"It'll allow some more flexibility with scheduling and provide more opportunities for the students of Summerland," Finke said.

Current English Language Learner paraprofessional Connie Cronin will maintain her position but will now be the ELL educator.

Finke said Angela Tagel oversees the program, but due to an increased caseload, she hasn't been able to assist Cronin and the ELL population.

"Mrs. Cronin has been involved in the program for a number of years. She has a teaching degree," Finke said. "I would feel comfortable having someone dedicated to those students."

Tom Thramer was approved to be a full-time substitute.

"On a normal day, we have at least one sub in the building," Finke said. "He will also be able to coach some junior high activities and varsity activities."

Currently, three elementary educators leave their classrooms at 2 p.m., to coach, during their respective sports seasons.

"Now, no elementary teacher will have to leave their classroom at the end of the day," Finke said.

"For many of our kids, that structure is so important," added Cathy Cooper, elementary principal. "The people who come in are doing a great job, but they (students) need their classroom teacher."

Discussion on the classified staff work agreement and superintendent contract were tabled.
