Nineteen-year-old defendant tests hot on sentencing day

February 2, 2023

Haiden Sleister, 19, of Tilden appeared in the Antelope County district courtroom in Neligh last Wednesday, Jan. 25, to be sentenced for attempted possession of a stolen firearm, a crime committed March 19, 2022.

Sleister, who arrived late to court, had not yet produced a specimen for pre-court drug/alcohol testing when the Honorable James Kube called his case. Kube advised Sleister that he would revoke bond and keep him incarcerated until he tested clean. The judge further advised that he only held court in Antelope County one time a month, with the next court date scheduled Feb. 22.

The case was resumed later Wednesday morning after Sleister was able to produce the specimen. According to court documents, he tested positive for methamphetamine and THC. Kube remanded Sleister to the custody of Antelope County sheriff Bob Moore, bond was revoked and sentencing rescheduled for Feb. 22.

Sleister pleaded guilty to the crime in October after reaching a plea agreement with the late Antelope County Attorney Joe Abler. In exchange, Abler reduced the original Count I from possession of a stolen firearm, a felony, to attempted possession, dismissed Count II, felony theft, and agreed to file no additional charges in the case.

Kube sustained requests for continuances of pretrial hearings and jury trials made on behalf of four defendants by their attorneys. The hearings were continued to March 29 and jury trials are now slated for April 17.

The cases include:

Michael Doty of 29, of Page, represented by Antelope County public defender Pat Carney; charged with two Class 3A felony counts of making terroristic threats, alleged June 28 in Orchard; bond continued - modified Sept. 28, to personal recognizance while participating/residing at Anchor House transitional living facility, to be reinstated at $20,000, 10% cash, if he leaves Anchor House for any reason;

• Isaac W. Anderson, 37, of Brunswick, represented by court-appointed attorney, Martin Klein of Neligh; charged with a Class 3A felony allegation that he failed to register with the county sheriff, per terms of the Nebraska Sex Offender Act; bond, in the amount of $5,000, 10%, posted July 8, continued;

• Brent A. Jonas, 45, represented by Carney, bond is continued at $10,000, 10%, and his wife, Christina M. Jonas, 37, represented by Klein, with bond continued at $50,000, 10%, both with bond conditions for not leaving the states of Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota; both charged with two counts alleged Sept. 18, 2022, Count I, a Class 2A felony, possession of marijuana with intent to deliver and Count II, a Class 4 felony, possession of methamphetamine.
