Start them young • Andi Bayne, along with her dad, Nick, accepts the youngest female fisherman award at Sunday's ice fishing tourney in Royal.

Andi Bayne of Omaha will never forget the first time she competed in the Royal ice fishing tournament.

The five year old returned to Nebraska's largest city with a fishing tale of epic proportions.

Bayne received the trophy for the youngest female fisherman and memories of spending Saturday night in an ice fishing hut at the lake.

It started when her dad, Nick, lost his iPhone, which spilled into the frozen lake.

"It's out there in the lake with the fishies," Nick said.

The family would have made accomodations at a motel. Without a phone, Bayne couldn't make a call to reserve a room.

Instead, the family opted to stay at the lake with friends.

"So, we spent the night on the ice," he said.

"It was fun. We slept on an air mattress," Andi added.

"It wasn't bad. I know we won't forget it," Nick said.

Young Andi also returned home with an empty bucket. Bayne and her brother, Jaxson, didn't catch a single fish out of Grove Lake during Sunday's event.

"We got nibbles," Andi said.

How did the Omaha family end up entered in the Royal tourney?

"We saw it on Facebook," Nick said. "Saw it was for a fire department so we decided to come on up."

The Bayne family spends a lot of time fishing around the Omaha area. Jaxson and Andi said they prefer ice fishing.

"Winter is my favorite season," Jaxson noted.

Nick said he is still trying to convince his wife to brave time on the ice.
