Ground broke for housing project in Clearwater

A new duplex is under development in Clearwater, with assistance from a $221,000 Nebraska Affordable Housing Trust Fund grant. A groundbreaking ceremony was held Thursday, Oct. 27, at the site on the corner of Nebraska and Utah streets.

Steve and Michelle Stearns, members of the village's economic development board, board of trustees and other dignitaries attended the 1 p.m. event.

Stearns Construction, of Clearwater, will serve as developer of the housing project. Each unit covers 1,085 square feet and will include two bedrooms and one bathroom, a laundry room, storage area, kitchen, dining and living rooms and a single-car garage.

Clearwater economic development director, Lauren Sheridan-Simonsen worked with Stearns and Miller & Associates to "create a plan that benefits Clearwater for the long haul." The application was submitted in April 2021 and the award was announced in September 2021.

Per NAHTF guidlines, the structure must be completed within 24 months. Construction is expected to be complete in May or June 2023.

NAHTF was established to assist communities tackle local housing needs.
