First day of school for Summerland students set for August 16

Back-to-school season begins next week for Summerland students. For students, the 2022-2023 school year begins Tuesday, Aug 16. A 1:30 p.m. dismissal is scheduled that day.

Staff members reported for in-service training, Aug. 8, will participate in Marzano training, Aug. 11 and 12 and finalize classrooms, Aug. 15.

Families of students in preschool through sixth grade are invited to an open house, Monday, Aug. 15. Classrooms will be open at 5 to 6:30 p.m.

The Bobcat Booster Club will host a burger bash, Monday, from 4:30 to 6 p.m., at the school. Following at 6:15, boosters will hold a meeting, which will include election of officers.

Preschool students will report for the first day of school Monday, Aug. 22.

Four new employees will join the Summerland staff. Brett Kaczor will teach business courses. He replaces Amy Selting, who accepted a position at Elgin Public School.

Jody Fox, who previously taught in Ewing and O’Neill, will teach special education, following the retirement of Kami Dickerson.

Shannon Stelling will serve as speech therapist. She assumes the position formerly held by Sheila Kropp, who retired at the end of the 2022 school year.

One new paraprofessional, Alyssa Beed, will be onsite.

The first week ends with the Bobcat football squad traveling to Spalding for a game against Riverside. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
