Three area women faced the Honorable Donna Taylor, in the Antelope County courtroom in Neligh, on Wednesday, Jan. 5, on Class 1 misdemeanor charges stemming from Dec. 1, 2021, compliance checks conducted by Nebraska State Patrol officers with assistance of an 18-year-old male confidential informant.

The defendants waived their right to counsel. Lori A. Boelter, 57, of Brunswick pleaded guilty to selling alcohol to the minor at the Royal Bar and Grill, Melanie A. Sheldon, 37, of Neligh pleaded guilty to selling alcohol to him at Casey’s in Neligh and Angelica M. Volquardsen, 19, of Neligh admitted a sale to the minor at HiWay Mart in Clearwater.

Boelter testified she had checked the man’s identification and, after the sale of a six-pack of beer, realized her mistake and went after him, but the officers were already coming inside the bar by the time she reached the door. Sheldon said the can of beverage she sold “wasn’t in the system,” so the cash registere did not prompt her to scan an ID. Volquardsen did not ask for an ID.

Boelter and Volquardsen were each fined $500 and taxed $50 costs. Sheldon, who had contacted Antelope County prosecutor Joe Abler and followed his recommendation to complete an online course, was fined $450 and $50 costs.

The three defendants were all employees of the respective businesses. Taylor questioned each on their role at the business, noting that if they had ownership, the penalty would include jail time. She also pointed out the potential effect of the convictions to the businesses’ liquor licenses and commented that the CI’s photo looked “like he was 12.”
