The Great American Smokeout® is November 18

November 18, 2021

Quitting smoking isn’t easy; having a plan and the right tools can help smokers be successful. The Great American Smokeout event on Nov. 18 can be the day to start the journey toward a smoke-free life. Thousands of people who smoke across the country will join together in taking an important step toward a healthier life and reducing the risk of cancer, taking advantage of resources and support to help quit.

Studies show that quitting smoking, even for one day, has positive health benefits. The Nebraska Tobacco Quitline - 1-800-QUIT-NOW - is a free resource that can help. It offers information and access to quit coaches who can answer questions, assist with making a quit plan and help access FDA-approved quit smoking medication. It’s true that quitting smoking is not easy; but you don’t have to do it alone.

While the rates of cigarette smoking in Nebraska have declined to 14% in 2019, there is still work to be done. Smoking remains the single largest preventable cause of death and illness in the world. Some groups smoke more heavily or at higher rates and suffer disproportionately from smoking-related cancer and other diseases.

No matter the age or when an individual began smoking, quitting improves health, both immediately and over the long term. Getting help through counseling and FDA-approved medications can dramatically increase chances of quitting successfully. Here are some additional tips for those quitting tobacco:

• Do not use tobacco—not even one puff or chew!

• Stay active—walking, exercising or doing other activities will help.

• Drink lots of water and 100% juices. Limit or avoid alcohol.

• Talk to a healthcare provider and let them know of plans to quit.

• Change routines. Use a different route to work. Drink tea instead of coffee. Eat different foods.

• Call the Nebraska Tobacco Quitline. 1-800-QUIT-NOW (784-8669) or 1-855-DÉJELO-YA (335-3569)
