In addition to occupational therapy services, Sheleene Charf, OTR/L, CLT of MSM Enterprises, also offers specialized lymphedema services at Antelope Memorial Hospital.

Lymphedema is the stagnation of lymph fluid in a portion of the body, usually the arms and legs.

"Lymphedema is associated with some type of malfunction of the lymphatic system, resulting in an obstruction of venous and lymphatic vessels or lymph nodes," said Charf. "Common causes of lymphedema are surgery, injury, venous insufficiency and cancer treatment."

"Lymphedema is a progressive condition," added Charf. "If untreated, it results in an abnormal amount of protein fluid collecting in the tissues of one or more extremities."

Stagnation causes tissue channels to increase in size, while reducing oxygen through the transport system. However, lymphatic massage goes far in reversing lymphatic congestion in extremities over time.

"I enjoy specializing in lymphedema therapy," Charf said. "There is much that can be done to help those afflicted with it. Words cannot describe how rewarding it is when an individual begins to feel the benefits of lymphatic massage. It can be life changing to him/her."

"Charf 's lymphatic massages are wonderful," said Dewey of Neligh. "In only three weeks, I've seen a lot or improvement. I can now stand longer, walk longer and for further distances and lift my legs higher. I also can see my toes and ankles and feel like I have 'normal' legs again. I'm very thankful to Sheleene for this service; she is very kind, gentle and caring. Plus, it's available just minutes from home."

As an occupational therapist, Charf also assists individuals who struggle with chronic pain, injuries of the upper extremities orother physical impairments. She helps patients to develop, recover and improve skills they need for daily living and working. She also offers home safety assessments for those having difficulties at home.
