Out My Kitchen Window

BEV WIELER

I’m watching the water sprinkler go back and forth out my kitchen window. Outside the birds are enjoying the light mist of water in the garden. They sing what I call their happy song.

Oh this is living the dream for me. I’m retired and sitting on my patio enjoying the warm weather and looking over the flower garden. The peonies and iris had a long bloom season and are loosing their color while lily flower pods show color as I wait for their blooms to burst open.

Annuals continue to grow but aren’t quite in bloom yet, but those I planted in pots fill the area with their instant color.

An assortment of bugs can be heard and I do have to swat at them occasionally as they pester me.

I know the afternoon and early evening will be too hot to enjoy the out doors but until then, I love it.

This is what gardening is all about.

Earlier I had ventured to the veggie garden to hoe a few weeds and water as much as I could. At this point in June the onions stand straight in rows and the blossoms top the peas. Potatoes are also in bloom and the cabbage plants have spread their leaves as we wait for heads to form in them.

Not everything is all wonderful in the garden. I can’t seem to get a good germination on my pumpkin seeds and that is frustrating to a person who absolutely can never have enough pumpkins to decorate with.

There is a solution. When you can’t grow it, head to a Farmers Market to buy it. I realize I can’t grow it all. So when time allows my husband and I like to head to Farmers Markets for the fresh produce.

Oh the special items you can find at markets. Last year we tried Fingerling Potatoes. They were yummy roasted on the grill. This year we are trying to grow them.

This past Saturday a new Farmers Market opened its gate in West Point. Two young energetic ladies organized it and searched out vendors. Oh my the goodies that were set up under tent awnings was amazing.

There were warm breakfast treats and sweet goodies, blooming plants, perennial plants, bouquets of flowers, air plants, fresh eggs and Cuming Country beef, boutique clothing, sewn and crocheted items. One thing in particular that caught my eye was the cutest little garden art.

One young teenager had used his skills to make the cutest little iron flower pot art. Using a thin medal rod and welded nuts to form the flowers. Attached on the stem was twisted medal washers that resembled leaves.

Well if you have ever seen my garden you know hubby and I couldn’t resist the garden art. Every year its the same little message to my husband, no more garden art. We already added in 2021, small cement garden nomes and three plate flowers on dowel sticks. I am a bit picky about where all these pieces go as I try and keep the garden orderly and not looking like a thrift store.

The young man sold out of the garden art in 90 minutes. I placed an order to pick up this following weekend. I will keep one and gift the others.

They were just to cute to resist.

The medal piece will go in a flower pot on my patio. It will be a reminder of a young entrepreneur who knew how to use his talents and make a few dollars along the way. He also made quite a few gardeners happy with his art.

There is always something fun at Farmers Markets. I am looking forward to making it to a few this season and of course returning to the West Point Farmers Market on Saturday. You just never know what that young man may come up with next.
