Summerland Public School BOARD OF EDUCATION

May 10, 2021

Summerland Public School Board of Education met in regular session, Monday, May 10, 2021, at the Ewing site. President Ed Nordby called the meeting, which was advertised in the May 5 newspaper, to order at 6 p.m. Nordby noted the Open Meeting Act posted in the room.

Roll call was taken. Present: Candice Hoke, Marty Kerkman, Ed Nordby, Nate Schwager, Jeremy Wagner. Absent: Steven Thiele.

Motion by Kerkman, seconded by Schwager, to approve the absence of Thiele. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Wagner. Nay: none. Absent: Thiele.

Motion by Schwager, seconded by Hoke, to approve the agenda as presented. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Wagner. Nay: none. Absent: Thiele.

Public participation was heard.

Motion by Kerkman, seconded by Wagner, to approve the consent agenda items, including minutes of the April 12 meeting and monthly financial report. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Wagner. Nay: none. Absent: Thiele.

Old business. Motion by Schwager, seconded by Hoke, to approve the obsolete list as presented. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Wagner. Nay: none. Absent: Thiele.

Building construction update. John Wieser was on hand to discuss the progress on the building and grounds. He also gave a report on the project budget. Discussion was held concerning several items. The board agreed to sod and irrigate the main and practice fields and to pave the rock parking area.

Playground proposal. Julie Kutilek, from Creative Sites, was present to discuss the playground proposals. Motion by Kerkman, seconded by Schwager, to approve the larger playground equipment package that meets the grant fund requirements. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Wagner. Nay: none. Absent: Thiele.

Irrigation bids. This had been tabled from last month. Three different companies were contacted for bids, but we have no bids for consideration at this time.

New business:

Science chemicals disposal and transfer to new site. Mary Leisy was at the meeting to present the proposals for getting rid of chemicals in the science labs. Motion by Hoke, seconded by Wagner, to approve the Tradebe proposal for disposal of chemicals at all three sites. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Wagner. Nay: none. Absent: Thiele.

Staff resignations:

Motion by Hoke, seconded by Kerkman, to accept the resignation of Whitney Bentley. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Wagner. Nay: none. Absent: Thiele.

Motion by Kerkman, seconded by Schwager, to accept the resignation of Mary Leisy. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Wagner. Nay: none. Absent: Thiele.

Motion by Schwager, seconded by Wagner, to accept the resignation of Dawn Montgomery. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Wagner. Nay: none. Absent: Thiele.

Staff contracts:

Motion by Schwager, seconded by Kerkman, to approve Alexa Knievel as an elementary teacher for 2021-2022. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Wagner. Nay: none. Absent: Thiele.

Motion by Schwager, seconded by Wagner, to approve krista holliday as a 7-12 science teacher for 2021-2022. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Wagner. Nay: none. Absent: Thiele.

Special education policy 6010:

Superintendent Martin reported that we will need to approve an update to our SPED policy in order to meet the Improving Learning for Children with Disabilities requirements. Motion by Wagner, seconded by Hoke, to update policy 6010. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Wagner. Nay: none. Absent: Thiele.

Planning for 2021-2022 school year. After some discussion, the following plan was agreed upon: If necessary, the 7-12 classes will be held at the Ewing site. Football practices for both junior high and high school will be held in Ewing. All home football games will be held in Orchard.

NASB update. The monthly update was available to the board.

Administrative reports:

Principal reports:

Greg Appleby at Ewing: Graduation, testing, field day, schedules, district track and golf.

Cathy Cooper at Orchard: Graduation, schedules, MTSS, testing, field day, work day, working on bids for demolition of old building.

Mike Sanne at Clearwater: Graduation, testing, academic updates.

COVID-19 update: Supt. Martin reported that CDC recommendations have been updated.

Activity sponsor list: The activity sponsor list was made available to the board.

The next regular board meeting will be Tuesday, June 15, 2021, at the Orchard School in Orchard.

President Nordby adjourned the meeting at 8:17 p.m.
