Sixteen Bobcat lifters receive gold medals at Orchard AAU meet

The 2021 Orchard AAU powerlifting Meet was Saturday, April 10, with an impressive line-up of 113 registered lifters from Nebraska, South Dakota and Iowa representing 14 different teams.

Thirty Summerland Bobcat powerlifters competed in this year's AAU Championships.

"These 30 lifters had an outstanding day for the home crowd, breaking 10 total state and American records and every Summerland school record, not to mention each lifter setting numerous personal bests," said Coach Jeff Shabram.

The entire field of competition saw 22 different lifters set a total of 47 state records and eight American records.

Among that group were Summerland lifters Amor Zermeno, Larissa Thomson, Wyatt Shabram, Rafe Grebin and Jason Shaver.

According to Shabram, Zermeno set the state record for female 97-pound teen class squat, 148.75 pounds; deadlift, 182.5 pounds and total, 402.25 pounds.

Thomson broke her previous state record for the 123-pound teen class deadlift, 308.5 pounds; total, 644.75 pounds and push-pull total, 424.25 pounds.

Wyatt Shabram established the male equipped 123-pound teen bench only state record.

Grebin set a state record for the male 132-pound teen class push-pull record deadlift, with a pull of 385.75 pounds.

Thomson received the female outstanding lifter of the meet, based on strength index.

"Larissa won this award with an index of 5.54, a new school record, for Orchard, O-C and Summerland," Shabram said.

Speaking of school records, they all fell Saturday.

Thomson's name is etched in the record books for squat, 220.25 pounds; deadlift, 308.5 pounds and total, 644.75 pounds.

Jacob Behnk broke four records: squat, 380.25 pounds; bench, 286.5 pounds; deadlift, 472.75 pounds and total, 1,140.75 pounds.

Trevor Thomson established a new record for strength index, with 6.05.

Gunnar Shabram broke the biggest gain record in one season, setting the bar at 183 pounds.

Coach Shabram noted other Summerland individual highlights of the day, including Behnk's total of more than 1,100 pounds; Derek Maxwell, Trevor Thomson Anthony Umphress and Luis Mendoza all tallied more than 1,000 pounds apiece and Gunnar Shabram and Riley Fisher ended with totals of more than 900 pounds each.

"After the busy day of lifting was finished, the Summerland team earned the 2021 Nebraska AAU championship trophy," the coach said.

The Bobcats scored 97 points to claim the top spot.

DC West finished second with 79 points; Humboldt/Table Rock/Steinauer placed third with 78 points; Hamlin, South Dakota, scored 65 points and placed fourth, while Silver Lake and Boyd County scored 40 apiece to tie for fifth place.

In the adult division, Big Money Enterprises, from Lincoln scored 39 points and edged out the Columbus Misfits, who ended with 36 points. A team from LeMaris, Iowa, finished third, with 10 points.

Taking home gold medals were Connor Thomson, 114-pound raw; Wyatt Shabram, 123-pound equipped; Landon Nelson, 123-pound youth raw; Grebin, 132-pound raw; Jason Shaver, 148-pound ironman; Coy Wickersham, 148-pound youth raw; A.J. Hobbs, 181-pound youth raw; Trevor Thomson, 181-pound raw; Gunnar Shabram, 220-pound raw; Maxwell, 198-pound equipped; Jeff Shabram, 220-pound raw masters; Sierra Thomson, 88-pound raw; Zermeno, 97-pound raw; Larissa Thomson, 123-pound raw; Jaelyn Shaver, 132-pound raw and Savanna Ferris, 165-pound raw.

Seven lifters took home silver medals, including Jorden Cox, 123-pound youth raw; Anthony Ferris, 123-pound raw; David Arroyo, 181-pound raw; Behnk 242-pound raw; Mendoza, 308-pound raw; Raina Krebs, 220-pound raw and Taryl Bazelman, 148-pound open raw.

Five lifters won bronze medals, including Matt Umphress, 148-pound raw; Anthony Umphress, 198-pound raw; Colby Hupp, 220-pound raw; Christian Behnk, 242-pound raw and Fisher, 275-pound raw.

Cody Wickersham finished fourth in the 132-pound raw class and Gaven Gilsdorf earned fifth place in the 198-pound raw class.

"It was an impressive display of power Saturday as all of the Bobcat lifters increased totals and bumped up to stronger lifting clubs," said Jeff Shabram.

Raise the bar • Extra effort - especially facial expressions - are the norm during powerlifting events. Summerland lifter, Landon Nelson, nails the deadlift during his third attempt at Saturday's Orchard AAU Powerlifting Invite. Nelson earned the gold medal in his weight class.

Saturday's meet was the last of the 2020-21 school year. One more powerlifting meet will be held before school starts next fall. Team members will compete in the Cornhusker State Games, Saturday, July 17, in Lincoln.

The 2021-2022 season will kick off with the Lexington powerlifting Meet in early December.

Coach Shabram said, "Nice job and keep up the good work, kids. It is fun to watch you grow in both mind and body."

Saturday was an overall amazing display of power for many of the competitors, according to Shabram.

The heaviest total this year was again lifted by Nathan Redwing, of Mead, with 1,923.5 pounds.
