"This was a good week for the Lady Bobcats Basketball program with winning the subdistrict championship," Summerland skipper Greg Appleby told the Advocate-Messenger.

In Tuesday's subdistrict opener against Elkhorn Valley, Appleby said the Lady Bobcats played well offensively and defensively, allowing them to take control of the game.

"Our defense was in sync all night long and we played well together offensively, with only eight turnovers."

Brenna Wagner led the way with 22 points and Ady Mlnarik added 10.

Against Elgin Public/Pope John Thursday night, Appleby said the Lady Cats had to claw their way to a win.

"After leading by five at halftime, EPPJ started the second half on a 7-0 run, but we were able to weather that and get great offensive contributions from everyone on the squad to build up to the 16-point win."

Wagner led the way with 16, but also relied on the entire team, including 10 big points from Hadley Cheatum, a big bucket to spark the team in the the fourth quarter from Kyra Nilson, six and five points from Emily Nordby and Avery Cheatum in the second half and nine points from Adyson Mlnarik.

"Maryssa Long has kind of been our unsung hero on defense and the boards as she pulled down six rebounds and kept EPPJ from getting anything easy near the basket," he said.

EPPJ only hit two two-point field goals on the night.

"Hadley Cheatum had a great defensive effort on Eisenhauer, who had hurt us big time in both previous games," the coach added.
