Learning curve • Morgan Cardenas, a Wayne State College journalism student, will spend eight weeks as an intern at the Summerland Advocate-Messenger.

A Wayne State College senior will join the Summerland Advocate-Messenger staff, as an intern, through a program sponsored by the Nebraska Press Association.

Morgan Cardenas, a 2016 graduate of Gothenburg Public Schools, majors in journalism, with a minor in online, social and electronic media at WSC.

She was originally accepted into the Rural Health Opportunities Program at WSC.

"After about two years, I realized that it wasn't what I actually wanted to do with my life. I have loved to read and write for as long as I could remember. I've also always liked to research things and am a curious person in general. So I decided to take a class in journalism to see if it really was something that I wanted to do and I loved it and made the decision to become a journalism major," she said.

Cardenas hopes to learn more about community journalism and reporting, in general.

"I would love to learn new skills on editing and writing stories, along with more experience with interviewing sources," she said.

She has worked on The Wayne Stater, the student newspaper at WSC.

Advocate-Messenger co-publisher Scott Schindler said Cardenas will gain valuable experience working at a community newspaper.

"Journalists at weekly papers learn every aspect of production, from story formulation to photography to circulation," Schindler said. "We are excited to have her join our staff this summer."

While working with SAM staff, Cardenas will write articles, learn about advertising design, create multi-media productions and operate social media accounts.
