Out My Kitchen Window

February 13, 2020

February 2020 is on the calendar as I look out my kitchen window. There are still red bows and swags of red berries decorating the flower garden. Moving from Christmas to February, we are ready for Valentine's Day.

February is one of my favorite months with dashes of pink and red spread around my house and yard and hearts tucked in where I can. As I watched the Super Bowl ad for Google, romance was definitely in the air in the Feb. 2 ad, along with precious memories.

During the ad, an elderly man's voice and Google shared memories of a couple's lives together.

The ad melted my heart. I loved it and would so enjoy being able to share moments with my hubby whenever we wanted to recall events on the computer. We are lucky to still be a couple and making more memories.

As I look out the kitchen window, I do have garden memories without Google. Perhaps memories is a huge part of what gardening is, and until I saw the ad, followed by a morning look out the window, I hadn't realized it.

I would ask the Google app, "Show me a photo of hubby putting up the fence I wanted for so many years." I yearned for a backdrop to the flower garden and he came up with the idea and put up the fence for me. It is the backdrop for not only perennials and annuals but also where we hang many seasonal decorations.

Then there is the tree with little wood windows for garden fairies to look out. He cut those tiny windows for me.

I would ask Google, "Show me a photo of our dads."

There is a cement bench hubby placed and we both have memories and a photo of our dads, long deceased, as they sat together and solved the world's problems so many years ago on the garden bench.

I would say to the app, "who helps Mike fill the bird feeders?" A photo would appear of hubby and our faithful dog walking the garden path to the so called flower shed and getting the feed for the birds and corn for the squirrels.

I would have to ask the app to call up photos of hubby gathering shovels and soil amendments to prepare spots for a new bush or an area for plating spring bulbs.

I might say, "Google, hubby didn't like pulling weeds but he will pick up the hoe and go after them when I get behind."

Oh there are memories in a garden. Mine also include the many perennials both moms shared with us and the many plants and garden art other people have gifted us with.

I have to wonder if Super Bowl Sunday was about a football title, party food or the ads. I know that one ad left an impression with me as I have great memories made with my husband and all who visit the garden.

I'm hoping for more memories this garden season.

I'm anxious for spring as yes, Feb. 2 was also Ground Hog Day. Shadow or not, spring is on its way and I am so ready for it, even when I can't go outside but look out my kitchen window.
