Out My Kitchen Window

September 5, 2019

I love sitting outside looking over my garden and am usually wearing a smile. I do have complaints in life and probably the biggest is not enough gardening programs on television or printed articles sharing Nebraska flower gardens.

I'm Bev Wieler and my husband and I are nestled in the countryside of rural Nebraska, sharing the hobby of gardening.

No matter what season it is we have found ways to splash color in the flower bed situated out our back door and luckily for us, outside our kitchen window.

Looking out my kitchen window on this late cool summer morning, while the dew still clings to the grass and the breeze has yet to stir the leaves on the trees, I watch a wild hen turkey peck at bugs then suddenly lift her wings and take flight to an ash tree in the yard windbreak. Late summer mornings can be ever so lovely. This is one, although I wait for the temperature to climb from a cool 65 to the mid 80s.

Gazing at the pink cleomes that stand next to white pointy hydrangea flowers reaching skyward, my eyes travel to the profussion zinnias that bloom in dark oranges and deep red reminding me that soon colors on the landscape will change. Nearby pink bubblegum vista petunias flood their garden area but leave room for taller deep purple Angelonias. The garden is still a palate of color.

This is a glorious time of the year when it it is still summer but autumn is looming.

As I walk out to the veggie garden I peek under pumpkin leaves in anticipation of the fall harvest. Nearby the long awaited first red ripe tomato has been plucked off a plant and its flavor was oh so wonderful. More green tomatoes wait tempting the taste buds.

In the house, I feel blessed to be able to look out my kitchen window and view my flower garden filled with my favorite flowers, both perennial and annual.

As my husband and I are realizing our bodies aren't as young as when we started the garden, we still dream of new plantings as we look through garden magazines and catalogs.

We love to share from our garden and recently split some day lilies with one of our daughters. Of course each came with a story of where the original came from or why it was planted.

Before retirement, I had the pleasure of writing a few features called out my kitchen window sharing what people saw out their window followed by some of their favorite recipes.

I continue to look out my kitchen window no matter the season. Today it was the hen turkey that captured my attention. I hope over the next months to share with readers what is happening Out My Kitchen Window.
