Not that I’m in a Bah Humbug kind of mood, but Christmas has lost some of its luster. Wait! Hear me out, says the women who hasn’t - and probably won’t - deck the halls of the Schindler casa this year. (In my defense, the miniature Husker-themed tree stays up year round, so one room is decorated.) I like Christmas, the story of peace, joy and love brought to the world with the birth of Jesus. Listening to the story of his miraculous entrance in the world gives me hope and makes me realize how pr...

Antelope County Commissioners adopted a new snow removal policy when they met last Tuesday at the courthouse in Neligh. Casey Dittrich, road superintendent, presented the policy that he and road foreman Aaron Boggs have been drafting over the past few weeks, with input from Tim Baxter from the Nebraska Intergovernmental Risk Management Agency, the county’s liability-insurance carrier. Input also came from road crew members and, according to Dittrich, has the “blessing” of county attorney Joe Abler. The policy establishes protocol for the order...

Looking out the kitchen window, the landscape has changed the past couple of weeks. Snow caps the trees and decor, making a wonderful winter photo. Out our window, green swags with red berries and bows on the garden fence are also frosted with snow. Even at night, we have a view out the kitchen window with lights glowing on the swags. Christmas shopping is near completed at our home. If you are still searching for a gift for a gardener, I have a few suggestions. They include subscriptions to...

Janie Olson arranges a dozen miniature pine tree-shaped cookies on a tray, grabs a bag of green frosting and begins piping the sweet cookie covering. First, she traces an outline along the edges before filling in the middle. Next, she zigzags a thin line of yellow, creating tinsel and finishes with red and blue icing, adding pops of color for ornaments. After more than two decades of decorating cookies, Olson - along with sisters Nancy Claussen and Joyce Miller - have mastered the art of...

It starts with a wadded piece of paper, topped with pieces of wood and chunks of coal. Once flames ignite, Nathan Feusse cranks the handle of the blower, building a blaze hot enough to meld metal. He raises a hammer in the air, pounds the piece until it breaks clean and returns the metal to the fire. A modern-day blacksmith, Feusse has created a makeshift workshop in his family's backyard in Clearwater. Here, he has crafted a variety of knives and hooks and experiments with different pieces to...
