Violating a building permit requirement will result in a stiffer penalty in the village of Clearwater.

During the trustee's Jan. 10 meeting, officials approved increasing the current $10 fine to $100, if construction starts prior to filing for a permit.

Trustee Kelly Kerkman told board members about a recent construction project where the owners did not want to file for a permit.

"We're not changing the permit. I think people will think more if they have to pay more," Kerkman said.

Clerk Angie Hupp said the county assesses a $250 fine if construction begins prior to securing a permit.
