Summerland Public School BOARD OF EDUCATION

June 14, 2022

The Summerland Board of Education met in regular session, June 14, 2022, in the school conference room.

President Nordby called the meeting, which was advertised in June 8, 2022 papers, to order at 7:30 p.m. Nordby noted the Open Meetings Act posted in the boardroom.

Roll call was taken. Present: Candice Hoke, Marty Kerkman, Nordby, Nate Schwager, Jeremy Wagner. Absent: Steven Thiele.

Motion by Kerkman, seconded by Hoke, to approve absence of board member Thiele. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Wagner. Nay: none. Absent: Thiele. Motion carried.

Motion by Nordby, seconded by Wagner, to approve agenda as presented. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Wagner. Nay: none. Absent: Thiele. Motion carried.

Public participation. No public participation was heard.

Motion by Kerkman, seconded by Schwager, to approve consent agenda items. Motion included minutes of the May 17, 2022, meeting and monthly financial report. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Wagner. Nay: none. Absent: Thiele. Motion carried.

Old business:

Discuss, consider and take all necessary action on the Ewing building. Motion by Kerkman, seconded by Hoke, to enter into executive session, at 8:54 p.m., to discuss the possible sale of real estate and property. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Wagner. Nay: none. Absent: Thiele. Motion carried.

The board came out of executive session at 9:21 p.m. The board gave Superintendent Finke the authority to make a counter offer to the Village of Ewing for the Ewing property.

Discuss, consider and take all necessary action on the superintendent’s salary. The Negotiations Committee had met prior to the meeting and recommended a 2% increase to Finke’s salary. Motion by Nordby, seconded by Kerkman to approve a 2% increase in the superintendent’s salary for 2022-2023. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Wagner. Nay: none. Absent: Thiele. Motion carried.

New business:

Discuss, consider and take all necessary action on bus bids. Finke presented three bids for buses. Motion by Schwager, seconded by Hoke, to approve the bus bid from Cornhusker International in the amount of $91,200 for a 2023 53-passenger bus, with a trade-in credit for two buses at $1,000 each. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Wagner. Nay: none. Absent: Thiele. Motion carried.

Discuss, consider and take all necessary action on floor refinishing bids. Fink presented two floor resurfacing bids. Motion by Kerkman, seconded by Wagner, to accept the bid from Egan’s to resurface the two gym floors. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Wagner. Nay: none. Absent: Thiele. Motion carried.

Review, consider and take all necessary action on milk bids and meal prices. Fink presented the only milk bid he had received. He reported on current meal prices: Breakfast is $1.50 for students and $2.40 for adults. PK to sixth-grade lunch is $2.35. Grades seven - 12 lunch is $2.50. Adult lunch is $4.00. Milk is 40 cents. Seconds for breakfast are 30 cents. Seconds for lunch are 75 cents. Fink recommended raising breakfast seconds to 75 cents, lunch seconds to $1 and milk to 50 cents.

Motion by Schwager, seconded by Hoke, to accept the milk bid from Hiland Dairy for the 2022-2023 school year. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Wagner. Nay: none. Absent: Thiele. Motion carried.

Motion by Nordby, seconded by Kerkman, to set the meal prices, as recommended, for the 2022-2023 school year. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Wagner. Nay: none. Absent: Thiele. Motion carried.

Motion by Hoke, seconded by Kerkman, to raise substitute teacher pay by $10 for a full day and $10 for five-plus consecutive days. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Wagner. Nay: none. Abstain: Schwager (with conflict). Absent: Thiele. Motion carried.

Discuss, consider and take all necessary action concerning bid from Prouty Construction on ground work and seeding. Motion by Kerkman, seconded by Hoke, to accept the bid from Prouty Construction for dirt work and seeding, as presented. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Wagner. Nay: none. Absent: Thiele. Motion carried.

NASB update. Finke clarified the point system NASB uses to recognize members.

Administrative reports. Elementary Principal Cathy Cooper reported on: math curriculum, MTSS, elementary track and field day, preschool graduation and elementary sections.

High School Principal Greg Appleby reported on state track,NVC admission prices and changes to Summerland season passes.

Finke reported on annual state report, which will be made available on the school website, ongoing construction work, closing on the sale of the Orchard building and the Booster Club golf tournament. He also reported we have received accreditation for the 2022-2023 school year.

Finke also recommended a committee be formed to discuss improvements to the hot lunch program. He asked for volunteers and Hoke and Wagner volunteered to be on the committee.

The next regular board meeting will be Tuesday, July 12, 2022, at 7 p.m.

Nordby adjourned the meeting at 9:22 p.m.
