Falcons edge Bobcats by one point for conference wrestling crown

Runners-up • Bobcat wrestlers finished second in the Niobrara Valley Conference wrestling duals, held Jan. 20 at Summerland. They lost the championship match to Elkhorn Valley, 34-33. It came down to the final match and, at the end, Elkhorn Valley scored one more point than the Summerland Bobcats to earn the 2022 Niobrara Valley Conference duals title.

North Central finished third and Neligh-Oakdale, fourth.

Against Summerland, the Falcons picked up wins in five middle-weight classes early in the dual.

Alex Thiele dropped an 11-10 decision to Nathan Halsey in the 126 class, while Jesse Thiele was pinned by Zach Hartl, in four minutes, in the 132-pound division.

The Bobcats did not field an entry in the 138 class, giving the forfeit to Tristan Smith.


EV's Marvick Hagemann pinned Logan Kester in :45 in the 145-pound class. Keaton Thiele pushed the Falcons' Reed Bennett to the end, but dropped a 6-3 decision at 152.

The Bobcat upperweights went to work, picking up wins in six weight classes.

Alex Arroyo pinned Trevis Halsey in 4:44 in the 160-pound match. Kendrick Schroeder fought a physical match against Jay Halsey in the 170 class, earning a 10-7 decision. In the 220-pound class, Wyatt Chipps pinned Paxton Cleveland in :16.

AJ Hobbs, Colton Thiele and Logan Mueller won by forfeit in their respective weight divisions.

After a double forfeit at 106 and a win by forfeit for the Falcons in the 113-pound class, Owen Vondra faced Connor Thomson at 120-pounds. Thomson lost a 12-5 major decision.

Leg lifts • Elkhorn Valley's Trevis Halsey tries to take Alex Arroyo to the mat. Arroyo worked his way out of the hold and pinned Halsey, in 4:44, in the championship dual match in the 160-pound division, Thursday, during the Niobrara Valley Conference wrestling meet.

In other championship matches, the Bobcats defeated North Central, 51-22. Thomson, J. Thiele, K. Thiele, Schroeder, C. Thiele and Chipps won matches against the Knights.

Mueller, Hobbs and A. Thiele picked up wins by forfeit.

Summerland also earned a win over Neligh-Oakdale, 48-15.

J. Thiele, K. Thiele and Arroyo defeated opponents in their weight classes, while A. Thiele, Kester, Hobbs, C. Thiele and Mueller won by forfeit.

In the opening bracket, Summerland defeated Niobrara/Verdigre, 72-0. Logan Mueller was the lone wrestler to take the mat for the Bobcats. He pinned Beau Hrbek in 4:24.
