Kester finishes sixth at Battle at the Point

If Saturday’s wrestling invite in West Point proved anything, it showed girls’ wrestling is a thriving sport in the state of Nebraska.

Twenty-two schools descended on the Cuming County town to fight for bragging rights. At the end of the day, Summerland sophomore Lenora Kester grasped the sixth-place medal in the 107-pound division.

Following a first-round bye, Kester pinned Morgan Brahmer, of Fremont, in 2:37. She dropped a third-round match to Jasmine Morales, of Grand Island, who pinned Kester in 1:48. In the fifth-place match, Kyra Gonzalez, of Fremont, pinned Kester in 2:14.

Three Bobcat wrestlers competed in the 235-pound division.

In pool matches, Calissa Kester pinned Johnson, of Fremont, in 2:55.


In bracket matches, Kester dropped her first match, by fall, in :31 to Kenzie Parsons, of Pierce. Julissa Guerrero-Pena pinned Kester in :30, in a consolation match. That set up a match for seventh place against teammate, Raina Krebs. Kester won, by fall, in 2:31.

Kester finished in seventh place.

Krebs opened pool matches with a win against Kallie Brester, of Fremont. Krebs won, by fall, in :35. Krebs faced Claire Paasch, of West Point-Beemer in bracket play, losing by fall, in 1:19. Krebs lost to Quinlyn Kennel, 2-1, in a consolation match.

Krebs ended in eighth place.

Ammy Aroyo lost, by fall, in 1:27, to Ali Edwards of Grand Island in pool play.In the consolation pool, Arroyo defeated Brester, of Fremont, by fall, in :16. Arroyo defeated Grace Johnson, of Fremont in the second consolation round. Arroyo pinned the Tiger wrestler in 2:16.

Arroyo ended in the ninth guaranteed place.

The Bobcats will compete in the girls’ divsion of the Elgin Public/Pope John meet, Friday. Wrestling begins at 5 p.m.
